Chapter 4 – A Different Future
Six months later, Lauren walked into the courthouse without assistance.
Her ribs had healed.
The emotional wounds were slower.
But she stood tall.
Nathan avoided looking at her.
For the first time since she had known him, he looked small.
After reviewing the evidence—including medical records, photographs, witness testimony, and surveillance footage—the court found him guilty on multiple charges.
Lauren didn't celebrate.
She simply exhaled.
The fear she had carried for years finally began to loosen its grip.
Outside the courthouse, Vincent stood waiting.
He opened his arms.
Lauren hugged him tightly.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"For what?"
"For telling you not to let anyone survive."
Vincent gently rested a hand on her shoulder.
"I understood what you meant."
She looked at him.
"I wanted revenge."
"You wanted the pain to stop."
He smiled sadly.
"But real justice doesn't come from revenge."
"It comes from making sure they can never hurt you—or anyone else—again."
Lauren nodded.
For the first time in years, she believed him.
She finalized her divorce, rebuilt her life, and eventually began volunteering with an organization that supported survivors of domestic violence.
Whenever someone asked how she found the strength to leave, she gave the same answer:
"The hardest phone call I ever made wasn't asking someone to save me."
"It was deciding that I deserved to be saved."
