Chapter 2 – The Man at the Basement Door

The handle turned slowly.
Lauren's heart pounded so hard she thought Nathan would hear it.
She tightened her grip around the cracked phone, keeping the call connected.
Her father hadn't spoken for several seconds, but she knew he was still listening.
The basement door creaked open.
Nathan descended one step at a time.
His polished shoes echoed against the concrete stairs.
He carried a small flashlight in one hand and a bottle of water in the other.
"So," he said coldly, "have you had enough time to think?"
Lauren didn't answer.
Every breath sent sharp pain through her ribs.
Nathan set the bottle on an old workbench.
"I'll make this simple."
He crouched a few feet away.
"You'll tell everyone you slipped on the stairs."
"No."
"You'll apologize to Monica."
Lauren stared at him.
"I'll never apologize to your mistress."
His expression hardened.
"You still don't understand who controls this marriage."
He reached toward her.
Before his hand could touch her shoulder—
A voice came through the phone speaker.
"Nathan."
Nathan froze.
He recognized that voice instantly.
Vincent Moretti.
For years Nathan had mocked the rumors surrounding Lauren's father.
He called them exaggerated stories from another generation.
But hearing that calm voice echo through the basement changed the color in his face.
Vincent spoke slowly.
"I know exactly where my daughter is."
Nathan swallowed.
"This is between my wife and me."
"No."
A long pause followed.
"You crossed the line when you laid a hand on her."
Nathan forced a laugh.
"You're too late."
Vincent answered with chilling certainty.
"Look out your front window."

Nathan rushed upstairs.
Lauren heard the front door slam open.
Several engines idled outside.
Dark SUVs lined both sides of the quiet street.
Their headlights illuminated the house like daylight.
Men stepped out one by one.
Not with weapons drawn.
Not shouting.
Simply waiting.
At their center stood Vincent.
A silver-haired man in a charcoal overcoat.
His posture was relaxed.
His eyes were not.
Nathan suddenly understood something Lauren had always tried to tell him.
Her father wasn't feared because he lost control.
He was feared because he never did.
Within minutes, police sirens filled the neighborhood.
Nathan frowned.
Police?
That hadn't been what he expected.
Vincent had already called emergency services before arriving.
An ambulance pulled into the driveway.
Officers followed close behind.
Nathan tried to block the entrance.
"My wife isn't here."
A paramedic glanced past him.
"We received a report of an injured woman trapped inside this residence."
Nathan's confidence began to crack.
The basement door opened again.
This time it wasn't Nathan.
Two firefighters carefully descended the stairs.
"There she is."
Lauren was gently lifted onto a stretcher.
The medic examined her bruises.
"Possible multiple rib fractures."
Another officer photographed the room.
The deadbolt.
The shattered phone.
The bruises on Lauren's wrists.
Every detail became evidence.

Nathan watched silently as handcuffs were fastened around his wrists.
"You have the right to remain silent..."
