Chapter 4 - The Final Verdict

Six months later.
The federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by media vans and camera crews. The trial of The United States v. Grant Holloway had captivated the nation, exposing the dark underbelly of Silicon Valley corporate espionage and domestic abuse behind closed doors.
I walked up the courthouse steps wearing a sharp white wool coat, flanked by my father and Malcolm Shaw. Flashbulbs blinded me from every angle, but I didn't shield my eyes. I kept my head high, walking with a steady, unyielding stride.
Inside the packed courtroom, the atmosphere was thick and suffocating.
When the bailiff announced the judge, we all rose. Judge Elizabeth Vance—a formidable woman with decades on the bench—scanned the courtroom before looking down at the defense table.
Grant sat beside a public defender who looked exhausted and defeated. Grant’s hair was unkempt, his orange jumpsuit hanging loosely over a frame that had lost its arrogant posture. He looked older, gaunt, and desperate.
When his eyes met mine across the courtroom, he flinched, quickly looking down at the polished wooden table.
"Please be seated," Judge Vance ordered.
The sentencing hearing was swift and merciless.
"Mr. Holloway," Judge Vance began, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent room. "You have been convicted on all counts: federal wire fraud, securities manipulation, obstruction of justice, tax evasion, and felony domestic battery resulting in severe physical trauma."
She paused, leaning forward over her bench.
"The court has reviewed the victim impact statements, the forensic financial audits, and the medical records detailing a systematic pattern of physical and psychological torture inflicted upon your wife over the course of your marriage. Men like you believe that wealth and intimidation place you above the law. You are mistaken."
Grant gripped the edges of the table, his knuckles turning white.
"For the crimes of financial conspiracy and corporate fraud," Judge Vance continued, "I sentence you to twenty years in federal penitentiary. For the charge of felony domestic abuse, I impose an additional ten consecutive years without the possibility of parole. Total sentence: thirty years."
Bang.
The gavel struck the sounding block. The sound echoed like a gunshot through the room.

Grant buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, desperate sob as two federal marshals stepped up behind him, uncuffed him briefly only to secure him in heavy steel chains, and hauled him away toward the holding cells.
He didn't look back.
