Chapter 5 - The Medical Breakthrough

Calvin Rhodes walked over quietly, placing a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder.
“You did well, Marissa,” Calvin said softly. “Your mother would have been proud. She always knew Derek was a wolf in sheep's clothing, but she wanted you to see it on your terms so you’d never second-guess your own strength.”
“Thank you, Calvin,” I whispered, wiping a tear from my cheek. “For answering my call. For protecting Holly.”
“Always,” Calvin replied. He turned to Arthur Vance. “Arthur, ensure the medical endowment fund for Dr. Patel’s clinical trials in Boston is wired immediately. No red tape. No waiting periods. I want the private jet prepped for tomorrow morning.”
My head snapped up. “The private jet? For Holly?”
“Dr. Patel called me twenty minutes before we walked in,” Calvin said with a faint, rare smile. “They cleared an opening for an advanced trial protocol that showed a ninety percent remission rate in early-stage pediatric trials. But it requires immediate transport to Boston Children's Hospital in a sterile, pressurized medical cabin. Regular commercial flights were out of the question.”
I stared at him, my heart swelling with a rush of overwhelming, miraculous hope. “A clinical trial... in Boston? But the cost—”
“Is fully covered by the Rhodes Estate Medical Reserve,” Arthur Vance added, closing his red leather binder with a crisp snap. “Every cent Derek tried to steal has already been clawed back, audited, and redirected into your daughter’s medical trust. She will receive the absolute best care available on this planet, Mrs. Moretti.”

I looked down at Holly. Her little chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm. The dark shadows under her eyes seemed slightly less daunting now, replaced by the faint promise of a tomorrow she deserved to see.
“Thank you,” I choked out, tears of relief finally spilling over my lashes. “Thank you both.”
