Chapter 3 - The Audit of Derek’s Empire

Calvin Rhodes didn’t look at Derek or Vanessa. His sharp, intelligent eyes bypassed them entirely, locking onto me. He walked straight past the foot of Holly’s hospital bed, his expression softening into deep paternal warmth as he glanced down at my sleeping daughter, before instantly hardening back into flint when he turned to face my husband.

“Marissa,” Calvin greeted, giving me a respectful nod. He turned to the sharp-dressed man beside him. “Arthur, let’s set up right here.”

Arthur Vance pulled a sleek silver-trimmed iPad and a stack of printed financial statements from his briefcase, resting them on the small mobile tray table usually reserved for Holly’s lunch trays.

“Mr. Moretti,” Arthur said smoothly, addressing Derek with a voice that carried the weight of a courtroom judge. “My name is Arthur Vance. I represent the Rhodes Family Estate Trust and Mrs. Marissa Moretti.”

Derek swallowed hard, his arrogant composure finally fracturing completely. “I don’t need representation. This is a private family matter. Marissa is just upset because—because she’s under emotional stress—”

“She is under emotional stress, yes,” Calvin interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. “Stress caused by you embezzling funds from a subsidiary account tied to her maternal trust to finance your side-business ventures and your apartment lease for Ms. Vanessa Parker.”

Vanessa gasped, clutching her stomach. “That’s a lie! You can’t prove—”

“We can prove everything, Ms. Parker,” Arthur Vance stated calmly, tapping his tablet screen. He turned the device toward Derek, displaying glowing red transaction logs, wire transfers, and digital signatures. “Over the past eighteen months, exactly four hundred and twenty thousand dollars was systematically siphoned from the dormant commercial trust accounts managed by Mrs. Moretti’s late mother. Because Derek Moretti held secondary authorization as a corporate officer during a brief restructuring period four years ago, he abused that administrative clearance to authorize illicit transfers.”

I stood frozen, staring at Derek. “You stole from my mother’s estate?”

Derek’s face flushed a mottled, furious red. He pointed an accusing finger at Calvin. “Your mother gave me signing authority! She wanted me to help manage the portfolio! It wasn't theft, it was a business loan!”

“A business loan requires board approval, notarized collateral, and fiduciary transparency,” Calvin countered, stepping up until he towered over Derek. “You didn’t file a single disclosure. You used trust money to buy a luxury penthouse condo under a shell company for your mistress, and you funded your failing logistics startup with funds meant for cancer research and pediatric care.”

“This is insane!” Derek shouted, panic bleeding into his voice. “I’ll sue you for defamation! I’ll file for divorce and take half of everything!”

Arthur Vance offered a cold, humorless smile. “On what grounds, Mr. Moretti? Under the terms of the irrevocable trust, any legal spouse who attempts to misappropriate trust assets or commits marital infidelity resulting in financial drain forfeits all rights to marital property division. Furthermore, because you signed a post-nuptial agreement drafted by my firm five years ago—which you apparently didn’t read closely enough—you waived all claims to Marissa’s individual holdings in the event of fault-based dissolution.”

Derek stared at the lawyer, his knees visibly buckling slightly. He looked at Vanessa, whose face had gone from pale to chalk-white.

“Post-nup?” Derek whispered hoarsely. “There was... there was no post-nup.”

“Oh, there was,” I said softly, stepping closer to my husband. The woman who had cowered in fear, who had worked double shifts while he played high-roller with our lives, was entirely gone. In her place stood a mother whose claws were bared. “You signed it at our kitchen table after you crashed my car while drunk, remember? Mother made it a condition before she bailed you out of that lawsuit. You thought it was just standard paperwork.”

Derek stumbled backward against the window sill, the glass vibrating behind him. “Marissa... listen to me. We have a child on the way. Vanessa is pregnant. We can work this out. We can drop the lawyers, figure this out as a family—”

“As a family?” I laughed, the sound cold and devoid of all warmth. “You stood right there, looking at my dying daughter, and said she had a good run. You laughed while she fought for every breath.”

I turned to Calvin and Arthur. “Execute the freeze on all his personal and corporate accounts immediately. File the criminal indictments for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and embezzlement of trust funds. I want him stripped of every single cent, every title, and every asset by sundown.”

“Done,” Arthur Vance said, tapping his screen.

As if on cue, Derek’s cell phone began to buzz furiously in his pocket. Then Vanessa’s phone started ringing. And ringing. Message notifications pinged relentlessly from their banking apps, signaling the total, irreversible collapse of their stolen empire.
