Chapter 2 – The Woman They Thought Had Disappeared

For nearly five years, Clara Bellamy lived quietly under another name.

She settled in a small coastal town in North Carolina, where no one cared about old Charleston families or billion-dollar hotel empires.

She rented a modest white cottage with a wraparound porch.

Every morning, she packed three identical lunchboxes.

Every evening, she helped three little voices practice reading around a worn wooden table.

Her dream never changed.

She opened a small community learning center for adults who had never finished high school.

The center barely made enough money to survive.

But Clara smiled every time one of her students signed their own name for the first time.

Her children became her entire world.

There was gentle-hearted Emily, always asking impossible questions.

Curious Noah, who wanted to know how everything worked.

And fearless Oliver, who believed every stranger could become a friend.

Not one of them had ever asked why they didn't have a father.

Whenever they noticed classmates celebrating Father's Day, Clara simply said,

"Your daddy loved you before he even knew you existed."

It wasn't a lie.

It wasn't the whole truth either.

Meanwhile...

Charleston society never forgot Julian Prescott.

Within a year, he became executive vice president of Prescott Hospitality.

His face appeared in business magazines.

He attended charity galas.

He smiled beside wealthy investors.

But behind every polished photograph...

Something inside him remained empty.

He never married.

Not because women weren't interested.

Because none of them were Clara.

Vivian constantly introduced him to daughters of senators, CEOs, and old-money families.

Each relationship lasted only weeks.

Julian always found himself comparing them to the woman who used to laugh across a college library table.

Late at night, he sometimes opened the old email account Clara once used.

He had written hundreds of messages.

None were ever answered.

He convinced himself she had moved on.

He never imagined she had been carrying three children.

Everything changed one spring morning.

Vivian walked into Julian's office carrying a cream-colored envelope.

"I've made a decision," she announced.

Julian barely looked up from his laptop.

"What decision?"

"I'm arranging your wedding."

He frowned.

"My wedding?"

"To Victoria Langston."

Julian sighed.

"Mother..."

"She comes from the right family."

"I don't love her."

Vivian smiled coldly.

"Love fades."

"Legacy remains."

Months of pressure finally wore him down.

He stopped arguing.

Not because he wanted another woman.

Because he was exhausted.

The engagement became the social event of the year.

Private jets.

Luxury magazines.

National press.

A ceremony at Prescott Airfield beside the family's newest corporate aircraft.

Everything Vivian had ever dreamed of.

Except one detail.

She quietly mailed one final invitation.

Addressed to:

Ms. Clara Bellamy

No return address.

Only a handwritten note inside.

"Come watch the life you threw away."

Vivian smiled as she sealed the envelope.

She imagined Clara arriving alone...

Older...

Forgotten...

May you like

Broken.

She had no idea what would step off that airplane instead.
