Chapter 1 - The Glass of Shadows

The crystal glass stood on the marble tabletop, casting a distorted pool of amber light under the string of warm garden lamps. Around it, the guests of Villa Fontana remained frozen, caught in the terrifying vacuum of a sudden shift in power.

Alessio Fontana did not look at the frightened crowd. He did not look at Valentina, whose manicured hands were clenched so tightly her knuckles had gone stark white. His dark, impenetrable eyes remained fixed on the small, trembling child standing beside her mother, Greta.

“Step forward,” Alessio said.

The command was soft, but it carried the weight of a death sentence.

Greta Boschi pushed her daughter gently behind her skirts, her voice trembling as she bowed her head. “Mr. Fontana... please. She’s only a child. She didn't mean to cause a disturbance. She gets confused, she—she imagines things—”

“She didn't imagine the mark on the glass,” Alessio interrupted, his voice cutting through the humid night air. He lifted the heavy crystal tumbler by its stem, tilting it toward the light. At the base, the pale crescent scratch was clearly visible, right beside the faint, smeared stain of toxic blue residue. “And she certainly didn't imagine that someone switched this glass into the primary toast rotation.”

Valentina stepped closer, forcing a brilliant, high-society smile that didn't reach her eyes. “Alessio, darling, this is absurd. It’s a catering mistake. Someone dropped a glass, replaced it, or the kitchen staff mixed up the inventory. Why are we letting a maid’s erratic child dictate the mood of our guests?”

Alessio turned his gaze slowly toward his fiancée. The silence between them stretched, cold and heavy. For ten years, Valentina had played her part with flawless precision, charming judges, bankers, and charity boards. But right now, her eyes were darting toward the western gate with a micro-expression of panic that only a man who survived three decades in the underworld would catch.

“It wasn't a catering mistake,” Alessio said quietly. “Because this glass wasn't filled in the kitchen. The poison used here—potassium cyanide laced with a local sedative—leaves a distinct chemical signature. It dissolves slowly. It requires a syringe, applied directly to the rim before the final pour.”

A sharp intake of breath rippled through the gathered crowd.

“Search every exit,” Alessio ordered without turning around.

Within a fraction of a second, four armed men in tailored suits materialized from the shadows of the garden hedges, locking the iron perimeter gates and cutting off all communications signals on the terrace.

“Nobody leaves Villa Fontana tonight,” Alessio declared. “Until I find out which one of my trusted guests decided to assassinate me at my own engagement party.”
