Chapter 8 - The Clear Horizon

The morning sun of the New Year broke over the valley, turning the snowfields into a wide expanse of lavender and gold.
In the grand dining room of the Sterling mansion, the long mahogany table was set for breakfast. Eleanor sat at the head of the table, her strength fully returned, a cup of black tea held steadily in her hand. Beside her sat Lily, who was carefully coloring a drawing of a great shipping vessel with a bright red crayon.
Julian and Maria walked into the room together, their hands intertwined, their steps matching perfectly as they took their places at the table.
There were no more secrets in the corridors. There were no more forged signatures or hidden toxins. The house had been stripped of its beautiful lies, leaving behind a foundation built on loyalty, truth, and the quiet, unbreakable power of a woman who had looked past the wealth and seen the family worth saving.
"Papa," Lily said, looking up from her drawing with a bright, clear smile. "Are we going to the docks today to see the new ships?"

"We are, Lily," Julian said, reaching over to smooth her hair, his amber eyes shifting to Maria with a profound, unadulterated happiness. "We're going to see the new fleet. The ones with the Sterling name on the bow."
Eleanor lifted her tea glass, her eyes catching the bright morning light filtering through the tall windows. "To the new year, my family. And to the ledger that kept us together."
