By December, the winter winds had stripped the Hudson Valley bare, covering the Sterling estate in a thick, pristine blanket of white snow. The grand mansion looked peaceful from the private road, its white stone columns rising solid and warm against the pale blue twilight sky.
Inside the grand gallery, the crystal chandelier was lit once again, but tonight there were no corporate investors, no pinstripe suits, and no gold-sequined gowns. There was only a crackling fire in the massive stone hearth, the smell of fresh pine garlands, and the sound of Lily’s laughter as she chased the family’s new golden retriever puppy across the polished marble floorboards.
Arthur Vance and his daughter had both pleaded guilty to corporate conspiracy, wire fraud, and attempted murder. The assets of Vance Logistics had been liquidated under a federal bankruptcy order, its maritime fleet absorbed completely into Sterling Global Shipping, making the Sterling family the undisputed leaders of the North American transport industry.
Julian sat in his father’s old leather armchair by the fire, a glass of dark scotch held loosely between his fingers. He looked at the sweeping marble staircase—the place where his world had shattered three months ago.
Maria stepped into the room, no longer wearing her maid’s uniform. She was dressed in a beautiful, dark green silk dress that caught the warmth of the firelight, her hair loose over her shoulders, her expression peaceful and entirely free of the old ghosts. She carried a small, silver box—the one that contained her father’s original compliance ledger.

"It is, Julian," she whispered, her hand coming up to rest against his chest, her fingers curling into the warmth of his sweater. "The ledger is finally clear."
