Chapter 3 – The Silver Key

The ambulance confirmed I had mild hypothermia.

Wrapped in warm blankets inside my grandmother's limousine, I finally unclasped the silver key from around my neck.

"I think Mom wanted you to have this."

My grandmother's eyes softened.

"I wondered when you would bring it."

She unlocked a small oak box inside the limousine.

The key fit perfectly.

Inside rested several sealed envelopes.

A leather journal.

A flash drive.

And one handwritten letter.

My mother's handwriting immediately filled my vision.

If you're reading this, you've turned eighteen.

I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer.

Everything your father owns was built with money from my family, but he wanted you to believe none of it belonged to you.

Tears blurred the page.

The letter continued.

The Hawthorne Academy scholarship was real. I created a trust to protect your education. If anyone ever tried to stop you, Grandma would know what to do.

My grandmother quietly wiped away a tear.

"I promised your mother I'd wait until you were eighteen."

She squeezed my hand.

"You'll never have to ask permission to follow your dreams again."
