The driver immediately removed his coat and wrapped it around my shoulders.
"My lady," he said softly.
My grandmother never took her eyes off the house.
"How long has she been outside?"
I could barely answer.
"Almost... two hours."
A dangerous silence followed.
She turned toward her assistant.
"Call an ambulance."
Then another instruction.
"And call Attorney Sullivan."
The front door suddenly opened.
My father stepped onto the porch, irritation already written across his face.
"I told you to stay out—"
The words died the instant he recognized the woman standing beside me.
"Mother..."
His voice cracked.
My grandmother looked at him without emotion.
"You locked your daughter outside on Christmas Eve?"
"It was discipline."
"No."
She took one slow step forward.
"It was abuse."
Keisha hurried onto the porch, forcing an awkward smile.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"There isn't."
My grandmother looked toward the windows where Lucas and the twins were watching.
"Every child inside deserves better adults than the ones raising them."
Then she turned back to me.
"Come home with me."
