Chapter 1 - The Doorway Standoff

The wooden front door shuddered under the violent impact of a boot. Wood splintered around the frame, and dust rained down from the ancient ceiling onto the bare linoleum floor.
"Mrs. Carter!" a harsh, gravelly voice barked from the porch. "You've got three minutes to clear out before we change the deadbolts and clear the rest of this scrap!"
Elena tried to push herself up from the thin mattress, her face gray with pain and terror. "Victor... please. Take Lucy and get out the back door. These aren't normal bailiffs. They're Sterling's enforcement group—they don't care about legal notices or court orders."
Victor didn't move toward the back. He stood squarely in the small hallway, his tall, imposing figure completely blocking the view into the bedroom. He casually adjusted his silk tie and smoothed the lapels of his wet suit jacket.
"Lucy," Victor said, his voice as calm and steady as a marble pillar. "Go sit with your mother. Keep your hands over your ears."
The seven-year-old girl nodded wide-eyed, running to her mother's bed and burying her face in Elena's shoulder.
The front door burst open with a loud crack, swinging inward and banging against the wall.
Two bulky men in heavy canvas jackets stepped inside, dripping rain onto the floorboards. The lead man—a thick-necked brute with a jagged scar across his cheek—held a steel crowbar in his right hand. The man behind him carried a leather clipboard and a ring of heavy keys.
"What the hell are you supposed to be?" Scarface spat, stopping short as his eyes fell on Victor. "The house is seized. Clear out before I use this iron on your knees."
Victor slowly raised his eyes. His gaze was devoid of fear, filled only with an icy, clinical detachment that made the room temperature seem to drop ten degrees.
"My name is Victor Romano," he said softly.
The man with the clipboard froze, his hand tightening around his pen. "Romano? As in... Romano Global?"
"The very same," Victor replied. "And you are currently trespassing on property that is under active federal corporate investigation."
Scarface sneered, raising the crowbar an inch higher. "I don't give a damn if you're the Pope, pal. David Sterling signed the seizure order for this lot. This land belongs to Sterling Development now. Move aside."
"David Sterling doesn't own this dirt," Victor said quietly. "And in approximately twelve minutes, he won't own his company either."
Before Scarface could reply, the sharp wail of sirens echoed down the neighborhood street. Not city police sirens—the heavy, rhythmic horns of private armored escort vehicles.
Three massive black SUVs roared down the narrow lane, screeching to a halt directly behind Victor's vehicle, their flashing blue and red LED strobes illuminating the dark, rain-streaked windows of the decaying house. Eight men dressed in crisp tactical gear and dark suits stepped out, led by Marcus—Victor’s head of security, a former Special Forces operator whose presence alone could turn back a crowd.
Marcus stepped onto the porch, flanked by two armed security officers. His hand rested comfortably on his holster as he looked at the two men inside.
"Boss," Marcus said, stepping through the broken door frame. "The area is secure. Mr. Romano's executive legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, is on the line with the State Attorney General."
The man with the clipboard dropped his pen. It clattered loudly against the floorboards.
Scarface looked at Marcus, then at the heavily armed men standing on the porch, and slowly lowered his crowbar. "We... we were just following orders from the corporate office."
"Your orders are cancelled," Victor said smoothly. "Marcus, take their keys, take their cell phones, and secure them in the third vehicle. If either of them moves, consider it an active threat to my person."
"Understood, sir," Marcus said, motioning his men forward.
Within twenty seconds, Sterling's two enforcement officers were disarmed, zip-tied, and escorted out into the pouring rain without a single blow being struck.
Victor turned around and walked back into the small bedroom.
Elena was staring at him in absolute shock, her lips parted slightly, her hand still holding Lucy close.
"Who are you?" Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes.
"I am the man who is going to make David Sterling pay for every single thing he took from you," Victor said gently. He reached into his coat, pulled out a satellite phone, and handed it to Marcus, who had just stepped back inside. "Get Dr. Harrison and an advanced medical transport team here immediately. Mrs. Carter needs a private room at Northwestern Memorial."
"Right away, Mr. Romano," Marcus replied, dialing instantly.
Lucy peeked out from behind her mother's arm, her big brown eyes looking up at the towering billionaire. "Mr. Victor? Is Mr. Sterling going to take my bicycle now?"
May you like
Victor crouched down on the floor, bringing himself eye-to-eye with the little girl. He reached out and gently tucked a lock of wet hair behind her ear.
"Lucy," Victor said, his voice softer than anyone in the corporate world had ever heard it. "No one is taking anything from you ever again. Today, we're going to get your house back. We're going to get your mom healthy. And then we're going to find the men who took your brother's crib."
