Chapter 5 - The Quiet Morning

Six months later, I sat on the porch of a small, sun-drenched villa on the Amalfi Coast—the place I had dreamed of going when I was twenty, back when I thought life was just about love and art.
The pink diamond ring, now back in my possession as a piece of 'evidence,' sat on the table. It looked dull, a reminder of a lie I had once called a marriage.
The morning air smelled of lemon trees and salt water.
I opened the local paper. Michael and Chloe were both serving time in federal facilities, their reputations shredded, their assets seized by the government to compensate the investors they had defrauded.
I picked up the ring, walked to the edge of the terrace, and tossed it into the deep, dark blue of the Mediterranean Sea.
It sank without a splash, lost in the vastness of the water.
I turned back to my easel. My paints were waiting. My life was waiting.
There was no more grief to hide, no more apologies to offer, and no more men to be gracious for. I wasn't Michael Carter’s wife anymore, and I wasn't the grieving mother who had to be 'stable' for everyone else.
I was just Olivia.
And for the first time in my life, that was more than enough.
The sun climbed higher over the horizon, painting the sky in colors that belonged only to me. I picked up my brush, dipped it into the vibrant, living paint, and started a new life—one that no billionaire would ever be allowed to touch again.

The silence of the morning was no longer a weight.
It was a beginning.
