Chapter 2 - The Silent Audit

The fallout from the gala was swift and predictable. By sunrise, the headlines in every major trade publication were screaming about the "Billionaire’s Domestic Meltdown," featuring a blurred photo of Chloe stumbling and my hand mid-air.
Michael immediately issued a press release calling my behavior "an unfortunate episode born from long-standing grief," painting me as a fragile, unstable widow. He filed for an emergency separation, demanding I vacate our Bel Air estate and surrender all access to the corporate offices of Carter Nova.
He thought I was destroyed. He thought I was just the weeping, grieving mother he could easily trade in for a younger, flashier model.
He didn't realize that for the past nine months—since the day Lily died and Michael had walked in smelling of someone else’s perfume—I hadn't just been grieving.
I had been watching.
I sat in the office of Arthur Vance, the most feared forensic accountant in the city, holding a small, nondescript USB drive.
"You’re sure about these numbers, Olivia?" Arthur asked, his voice low.
"I tracked the offshore transfers since the day he started his 'consultancy' with Chloe’s father," I said, my voice steady. "Michael isn't just cheating on me. He’s been systematically siphoning intellectual property from Carter Nova into a shell company controlled by Chloe and her family. They aren't just taking my marriage, Arthur. They’re stealing the company I helped build."
Arthur scanned the documents, his eyes widening. "This is felony-level securities fraud. If this is verified, Michael doesn't just lose the divorce. He loses the board. He loses the company. He faces federal prison."
"Verify it," I said, handing him the key to my private safe deposit box. "Everything is in there. The true ledger. The original patents in my name that he swore were transferred to the firm. The proof that he lied to the SEC about the liquidity of his assets."
I stood up to leave, my reflection in the office window looking like a stranger. My eyes were cold. My hands didn't shake.
"One more thing," I added. "Chloe claimed she lost a baby because of me. Check the medical records she leaked to the press."
"Already did," Arthur smirked. "There’s no record of a pregnancy. No clinic, no doctor, no emergency admission. She faked the accident entirely."

I walked out into the bright California sun, feeling the first real sense of peace I’d had in nearly a year. Michael wanted me to be gracious.
I was going to be absolutely merciless.
