Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Empire

Two hours later, the blood had been cleaned from the floor, the broken doors were temporarily barricaded, and the medical team had left after confirming Luca had suffered nothing worse than severe muscle shock from the taser.
Luca sat in his wheelchair by the tall windows of his private study, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. The storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, star-studded night sky over the Chicago skyline.
The door opened softly, and Mara stepped inside. She wore a simple silk robe, her hair falling loosely over her shoulders. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the heavy, hollow ache of shock.
Luca turned his wheelchair to face her. His face was pale, and a faint bruise marked his jawline where he had slumped against the desk, but his eyes were sharp and intensely alive.
“You saved my life tonight,” Luca said quietly.
Mara walked over to the desk, resting her hands on the polished wood. “I saved my life, Mr. Bellandi. If you die, my father’s debt voids, but the men who bombed your car aren't going to leave loose ends. They would have killed me too.”
Luca let out a low, gravelly chuckle. He took a sip of his whiskey, never breaking eye contact with her.
“You could have run,” Luca said. “When the first man came through the door, you had an open path to the service stairs. You could have saved yourself.”
“I don’t run,” Mara said simply.
Luca set his glass down on the table. He gripped his armrests, his muscles bunching as he pushed himself forward. With a slow, deliberate heave, he locked his knees, gripping the edge of the desk for stability.
Mara watched in stunned silence as Luca Bellandi—a man told he would never walk again after the explosion—forced his trembling legs to support his weight. He stood there, swaying slightly, towering over her with the fierce, unyielding pride of a king refusing to bow.
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping her chin, tilting her face upward.
“The contract says one year, Mara,” Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion and a fierce, possessive warmth. “One year to stabilize my image, to play the devoted wife. But as of tonight… I am tearing that contract up.”
Mara’s breath hitched. “What?”
“We start over,” Luca said, his dark eyes burning into hers with absolute resolve. “No debts. No bargaining chips. Just you and me against every enemy in this city. Stay with me, Mara. Not because your father traded you, but because you choose to.”
Mara looked up at him—at the man who refused to be broken, who stood tall against the darkness holding onto her with both strength and vulnerability.
Slowly, a genuine, radiant smile broke across her face. She reached up, placing her hand over his, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his pulse beneath his skin.

“Show me how you run an empire, Luca,” she whispered.
And as the first rays of dawn broke over the Bellandi estate, the shadows of the past finally receded into the morning light.
