Chapter 4 - The Unseen Enemy

Three weeks passed in a gilded cage.
Life at the Bellandi estate was a masterclass in tension and survival. Mara quickly learned that Luca’s paralysis was a closely guarded secret within the criminal underworld. To the outside world, he was still the untouchable patriarch of the syndicate. But inside the walls of the mansion, he fought a daily, grueling battle with physical therapy, pushing his broken body through excruciating routines with a private specialist named Dr. Vance.
Mara often found herself watching from the balcony as Luca worked tirelessly in the private gymnasium on the estate’s ground floor, lifting heavy dumbbells from his seated position, sweat pouring down his face as he willed his unresponsive legs to obey him.
He never complained. He never asked for sympathy.
And slowly, against every instinct she possessed, Mara found her resentment turning into a strange, grudging admiration.
One evening, deep into the second month of their arrangement, the storm returned, lashing rain against the high windows of the grand salon. Mara sat by the fire, reading a book on art history, while Luca reviewed corporate ledgers at his desk.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered violently and died.
The backup generator kicked in three seconds later, bathing the room in a dim, amber emergency glow.
Luca’s head snapped up. His hand instantly dropped to the heavy Glock pistol resting in the hidden compartment beneath his desk.
“Stay by the fireplace,” Luca ordered in a razor-sharp whisper.
Before Mara could reply, the heavy double doors of the salon blew inward with a deafening crash. Splintered wood flew across the Persian rug as three masked intruders clad in tactical black gear poured into the room, automatic weapons raised.
“Bellandi!” the lead intruder shouted, leveling his rifle directly at the desk. “End of the line!”
Luca didn't flinch. With terrifying speed, he drew his pistol from the desk compartment, aiming with lethal precision. But before he could squeeze the trigger, a second gunman lunged from the shadows near the doorway, firing a high-voltage taser directly at Luca’s chest.
The electric shock hit Luca with brutal force. His body convulsed violently, his eyes rolling back as the pistol slipped from his numb fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor. He slumped forward over the desk, unconscious.
“Mr. Bellandi!” Mara screamed, moving instinctively toward him.
The lead intruder swung his rifle barrel around, blocking her path. “Stay back, little bird, or you’re next.”
Mara’s heart pounded in her throat, adrenaline surging through her veins. These weren't rival mobsters looking for a payout—they were professionals, sent to finish what the car bomb had started.
As the intruder reached out to grab Luca by the collar and drag him from the wheelchair, Mara’s eyes darted across the desk.
Luca’s fallen Glock lay just two feet away, half-hidden beneath a stack of ledgers.
The gunman was distracted, laughing darkly as he hoisted Luca’s limp body forward.
Mara didn't think. She dropped to her knees, lunged across the floor, and swept her hand across the polished wood, her fingers wrapping around the cold, heavy steel grip of the pistol.
She rolled onto her back, raised the weapon with both hands, and pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The thunderous roar of the gun filled the room. The lead intruder gasped, dropping his weapon as he stumbled backward and collapsed against the shattered doors. The other two gunmen whirled around in shock, but before they could fire, the heavy oak doors behind them exploded outward.
Six of Luca’s elite bodyguards, led by his fierce head of security, burst into the room, their assault rifles blazing. Within seconds, the two remaining intruders were neutralized, hitting the floor in a heap.

Silence descended once more, broken only by the crack of the fireplace and the heavy panting of the guards.
Mara lay on the floor, the smoking gun still clutched in her trembling hands, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
