Chapter 3 - The Truth Comes to LightThat evening, child protective investigators and police officers arrived.

Leo was interviewed by a child specialist.
No one pressured him.
No one interrupted him.
Finally, he whispered,
"I wasn't only in the kennel today."
The investigator leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
"It happened before."
"Lots of times."
He pointed toward the security system.
"Dad..."
"I thought the cameras were broken."
They weren't.
Months earlier, after several neighborhood break-ins, I had upgraded the entire security system.
I rarely checked it.
Vanessa assumed I never did.
She was wrong.
Technicians recovered archived footage.
The recordings showed everything.
Leo carrying groceries too heavy for him.
Being forced to eat alone.
Standing outside in the rain.
Locked inside the kennel.
Crying quietly while guests laughed only yards away.
The hardest video lasted less than thirty seconds.
Leo held one of Claire's framed photographs.
Vanessa snatched it away.
"You need to forget her."
"My wife is your mother now."
Leo answered through tears.
"I only have one Mommy."
Vanessa slapped the picture from his hands.
Even the detective stopped the video.
"I've seen enough."
Vanessa insisted the recordings lacked context.
"They're discipline."
"They don't show what happened before."
The detective answered calmly.
May you like
"They show enough."
She was arrested that night.
