Chapter 2 - The Guests Heard EverythingLeo wrapped his arms around my neck so tightly that I could barely breathe.

I carried him through the back door without saying a word.

The laughter from Vanessa's luncheon continued as though nothing had happened.

Crystal glasses clinked.

Women chatted about vacations and designer handbags.

No one noticed the frightened little boy in my arms.

Or perhaps...

They had noticed long ago and chosen to ignore it.

I gently set Leo on a kitchen chair.

"Stay here for a minute, buddy."

He nodded nervously.

"You won't leave?"

"Never again."

I walked into the dining room.

The conversation stopped almost instantly.

Vanessa smiled as though everything were perfectly normal.

"Oh! You're home early."

She walked toward me to kiss my cheek.

I stepped back.

Her smile faltered.

"Where is my son?" I asked quietly.

She blinked.

"I thought he was in his room."

"I just found him locked inside the old kennel."

Silence.

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Oh, that."

"It wasn't locked."

"He was having a timeout."

"In a dog kennel?"

"He needed to think about his behavior."

"What behavior?"

"He spilled juice on the patio."

I stared at her.

"You put my eight-year-old son in an outdoor kennel because he spilled juice?"

She folded her arms.

"Children need consequences."

One guest quietly placed her wine glass on the table.

Another lowered her eyes.

I looked around the room.

"Did anyone here try to stop her?"

No one answered.

Until an older woman slowly stood.

It was our housekeeper, Maria.

She had worked for our family since before Claire died.

"I did."

Everyone turned toward her.

Maria looked directly at me.

"I told Mrs. Brooks it was cruel."

"She said if I questioned her authority again, she'd fire me."

Vanessa's face turned pale.

"She's lying."

Maria shook her head.

"No."

Then she reached into her apron pocket.

"I've been keeping notes."

She handed me a small notebook.

Every page was dated.

Every incident carefully recorded.

Missed meals.

Hours spent standing in corners.

Destroyed drawings.

Punishments for mentioning his mother.

My hands began to shake.

I had been traveling across the country building a future for my son...

While he was surviving a nightmare inside our own home.
