Chapter 8: Sparrow's True Face

Rain pounded against the windshield as the FBI convoy rolled silently toward the abandoned naval shipyard.
No headlights.
No sirens.
Only darkness.
Inside the lead SUV, Agent Harris watched the GPS tracker.
"Two minutes."
No one answered.
Mark sat between two tactical agents, his wrists still secured with steel handcuffs.
His eyes never left the rain-soaked window.
Finally, he spoke.
"She's already watching us."
Harris glanced at him.
"Emily?"
Mark slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Sparrow."
Three hundred yards away...
Inside an underground command room beneath Pier 19...
The woman everyone knew as Special Agent Emily Brooks watched the convoy through sixteen surveillance monitors.
She wasn't wearing an FBI uniform anymore.
She wore plain black tactical clothing.
Her blonde hair was pulled into a tight ponytail.
Every movement was calm.
Controlled.
Calculated.
A younger operative approached.
"The convoy is on schedule."
Emily smiled.
"Of course it is."
"The Bureau always believes it's chasing us."
She looked toward Sarah's mother, who sat tied to a steel chair.
"They never realize..."
"...they're exactly where we wanted them."
Sarah's mother remained remarkably calm.
She studied Emily carefully.
"You've been lying for twelve years."
Emily shrugged.
"Twelve years isn't difficult."
"People only see what they expect."
"You attended my daughter's birthday parties."
"Yes."
"You held my granddaughter."
"Yes."
"You cried at your partner's funeral."
Emily looked directly into her eyes.
"I was trained to cry on command before I was twelve."
Silence.
Then Sarah's mother quietly whispered,
"I almost feel sorry for you."
For the first time...
Emily's expression changed.
Only slightly.
Only for a heartbeat.
Then it disappeared.
Outside...
The convoy stopped.
Hostage Rescue operators spread silently through the shipyard.
Snipers climbed rusted cranes.
Drones lifted into the rainy sky.
Thermal cameras scanned abandoned warehouses.
Agent Harris whispered into his radio.
"All teams report."
"Alpha in position."
"Bravo ready."
"Charlie moving."
Everything appeared normal.
Too normal.
Mark frowned.
"This is wrong."
Harris looked at him.
"What is?"
"They're letting us deploy."
Inside the bunker...
Emily watched every movement through hidden cameras.
She smiled faintly.
"They're exactly twenty seconds ahead of schedule."
Another operative looked confused.
"Should we engage?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"Wait."
Back above ground...
Sarah and Maya remained inside the command vehicle.
Sarah studied the shipyard blueprint again.
Something bothered her.
She couldn't explain what.
Then suddenly...
Her eyes widened.
"Harris!"
"What?"
"The maintenance tunnel."
He looked at the map.
"What about it?"
"It ends here."
She pointed toward a concrete warehouse.
"But..."
She traced another faded line.
"...this older blueprint shows another exit."
Everyone leaned closer.
The line continued beneath the harbor.
Ending...
Directly underneath the FBI command vehicle.
Harris's face turned white.
"Move everyone!"
The warning came one second too late.
The pavement beneath the command vehicle exploded upward.
A deafening blast shook the entire shipyard.
Concrete.
Steel.
Fire.
The armored vehicle lifted completely off the ground before crashing onto its side.
Shockwaves knocked agents flat.
Radio channels erupted with screams.
"Explosion!"
"Officer down!"
"Medic!"
Smoke swallowed everything.
Sarah struggled to breathe.
Blood trickled down her forehead.
"Maya!"
She crawled desperately through twisted metal.
"Maya!"
A weak voice answered.
"I'm here..."
Sarah found her pinned beneath a collapsed seat.
"I'm getting you out."
Outside...
Gunfire erupted from every direction.
Hidden shooters opened fire from abandoned warehouses.
Not many.
Only six.
Just enough to force every FBI sniper into cover.
Exactly as planned.
Mark listened carefully.
Then laughed once.
"They're still distracting you."
Harris stared at him.
"What?"
"The gunmen."
"They're not the mission."
He looked directly toward the harbor.
"They're buying time."
At that exact moment...
Far beneath the shipyard...
Emily calmly untied Sarah's mother.
"We're leaving."
The elderly woman frowned.
"You don't need me anymore."
Emily smiled.
"No."
"I need Sarah."
Sarah finally pulled Maya free from the wreckage.
Both women stumbled into the rain.
"Maya, stay behind me."
Before either of them could move...
A woman's voice echoed across the empty dock.
"Sarah."
Everyone froze.
Emily stood alone at the far end of Pier 19.
One hand rested casually inside her jacket.
The other held a small radio detonator.
Sarah raised her pistol.
"Don't move."
Emily smiled.
"You know..."
"I always admired you."
"You were the only agent who ever made me nervous."
Sarah's voice was ice.
"Where's my mother?"
Emily stepped aside.
Sarah's mother slowly emerged from the shadows.
Alive.
Unharmed.
But standing directly beside Emily.
Too close.
Far too close.
Emily held up the detonator.
"You shoot me..."
"...she dies."
No one fired.
The rain fell harder.
For several endless seconds...
No one moved.
Then Mark spoke from behind the FBI line.
"Emily."
She turned.
Their eyes met.
For the first time...
Her smile disappeared.
"You."
Mark slowly stepped forward despite the agents trying to stop him.
"Let her go."
Emily laughed softly.
"You've changed."
"I know."
"You chose love."
He nodded.
"Yes."
Emily looked almost disappointed.
"That's why you failed."
She pressed one button on the detonator.
A sharp electronic beep echoed beneath the pier.
Every FBI bomb technician looked down simultaneously.
One of them shouted in horror.
"Pressure charges!"
"There are explosives under the entire dock!"
Emily smiled calmly.
"If anyone moves..."
"This entire pier goes into the harbor."
Rain hammered against the rusted steel.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody blinked.
Emily looked directly at Sarah.
Then at Maya.
Finally...
At Mark.
Her voice remained perfectly calm as she spoke six words that froze every person on the dock.
May you like
"Choose which woman gets to live."
To be continued...
