Chapter 6: The Woman They Thought Was Weak

No one spoke.

The operations center seemed to freeze.

Sarah's mother...

Gone.

Not dead.

Not injured.

Simply...

Gone.

Agent Harris lowered the phone slowly.

"The surveillance team was neutralized without firing a single shot."

Sarah stared at him.

"My mother would never open the door for strangers."

Harris nodded.

"She didn't."

"They used one of our own vehicles."

My stomach tightened.

"Sparrow."

"No," Harris replied quietly.

"Someone working with Sparrow."

Across the room, Mark slowly leaned back in his chair.

His expression remained unreadable.

But for the first time...

I noticed something different.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

He looked...

Concerned.

Sarah noticed it too.

"You didn't know."

Mark remained silent.

"You honestly didn't know they were going after my mother."

He closed his eyes.

"I told them to leave families out of it."

Harris laughed bitterly.

"You thought terrorists followed rules?"

Mark looked away.

"They're not terrorists."

"What are they then?"

His answer chilled everyone in the room.

"They're believers."

Meanwhile...

Three hundred miles away...

An elderly woman sat quietly in the back seat of a black SUV.

Her hands weren't tied.

No one pointed a gun at her.

The young woman driving smiled politely.

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience, Mrs. Collins."

Sarah's mother looked calmly out the window.

"You're not FBI."

"No."

"Neither was the man outside my house."

The driver smiled again.

"You figured that out quickly."

"I raised an FBI agent."

She paused.

"And I was an Army intelligence officer long before my daughter was born."

For the first time...

The driver's smile faded.

Back at headquarters...

A technician burst into the room.

"Sir!"

"We found security footage."

"From where?"

"The safe house."

Everyone crowded around the monitor.

The video began.

Sarah's mother answered the front door.

A woman stood outside wearing a perfectly authentic FBI uniform.

Blonde hair.

Professional posture.

Calm smile.

Special Agent Emily Brooks.

The missing agent.

Sarah whispered,

"Emily..."

She had worked beside Emily for five years.

Shared cases.

Training exercises.

Christmas parties.

Emily had even attended my wedding.

The betrayal hit harder than anyone expected.

The footage continued.

Emily displayed official credentials.

Sarah's mother unlocked the door.

The camera recorded no violence.

No struggle.

Only conversation.

Then...

To everyone's surprise...

Sarah's mother smiled.

Picked up her purse.

Locked the front door behind her.

And voluntarily walked to the SUV.

Harris frowned.

"Pause."

The analyst froze the frame.

"Zoom in."

The image enlarged.

Emily wasn't threatening her.

She was...

Handing her something.

A photograph.

"What is that?"

The picture sharpened.

Sarah's face turned white.

It was a recent photograph of me.

Standing outside FBI headquarters.

A red circle surrounded my face.

Sarah understood immediately.

"They told Mom Maya was in danger."

I looked at her.

"You think she went willingly?"

Sarah nodded slowly.

"My mother would sacrifice herself without hesitation."

Harris quietly agreed.

"They manipulated her."

Inside the interrogation room...

Mark finally spoke again.

"Where are they taking her?"

Harris stared at him.

"You tell me."

Mark shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You expect us to believe that?"

"I wasn't high enough."

The room fell silent.

Harris frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Mark gave a tired smile.

"You think I was important."

"I wasn't."

"I was expendable."

The analysts continued decrypting files from Project Echo.

Thousands of documents.

Most heavily encrypted.

Then...

One folder suddenly opened.

Its title read:

Psychological Profiles

Inside were detailed reports.

Every operative.

Strengths.

Weaknesses.

Loyalty ratings.

Mark's profile appeared.

The evaluation made everyone's blood run cold.

Asset 47

Operational Effectiveness: Excellent

Emotional Stability: Compromised

Primary Weakness: Wife (Maya Brooks)

Recommended Action: Immediate Replacement

The room became silent.

Sarah slowly turned toward Mark.

"They ordered someone else to kill Maya..."

"...because you couldn't."

Mark didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

Harris leaned over the table.

"Why didn't you do it?"

For nearly a minute...

Mark remained motionless.

Finally...

He whispered,

"Because she smiled at me..."

The room was confused.

"When?"

"The first morning after we got married."

He stared at his cuffed hands.

"She made pancakes."

"They were terrible."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"But she laughed so hard she couldn't breathe."

His voice cracked.

"No one had ever laughed around me before."

Silence.

"I realized..."

"I wanted a normal life."

"You should have surrendered."

"I know."

"But I kept believing I could disappear."

He looked at me.

"They don't let people disappear."

At that exact moment...

Every computer monitor flashed again.

A new message appeared simultaneously across the entire FBI network.

White letters.

Black background.

Only one sentence.

RETURN ASSET 47.

Then another line slowly appeared underneath.

OR THE MOTHER DIES.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Harris immediately ordered,

"Trace it!"

The analysts attacked the network.

Firewalls.

Satellite relays.

Encrypted servers.

Nothing.

The signal bounced through twelve countries before disappearing.

Then...

One final line appeared.

Meeting location attached.

A GPS coordinate.

An abandoned naval shipyard outside Baltimore.

Time:

10:00 PM

Only three hours away.

Everyone turned toward Mark.

He stared at the coordinates.

His face lost every trace of color.

He whispered only four words.

May you like

"It's a suicide mission."

To be continued...
