Chapter 5 - The True Reward

The late afternoon sun of July cast long, golden shadows across the west garden of Hartwell House. The silver water of the fountain danced in the warm breeze, and the air was filled with the peaceful hum of summer.
Marcus Hartwell stood on the brick terrace, hands in his pockets, looking out over his domain. He still felt a slight stiffness in his lower back—a lingering reminder of the crash—but his legs were strong, fully recovered from both the accident and the chemical fog that had held them hostage.
The heavy oak doors opened behind him, and Claire Benton stepped out onto the terrace. She was dressed in a beautiful linen dress Marcus had personally sent to her hotel room, her face completely free of the stress and fear that had plagued her for months.
Holding her hand, hopping along the brick path with pure, unbridled childhood joy, was Lily. She still had her stuffed rabbit tucked firmly under her arm.
When Lily saw Marcus standing there, completely upright, tall and powerful in the sunlight, her eyes lit up like two stars. She let go of her mother’s hand and ran forward as fast as her small sneakers could carry her.
"Mr. Marcus! Mr. Marcus! Your legs woke up!" she squealed, throwing her tiny arms around his knees.
Marcus laughed—a deep, booming, joyous sound that echoed across the entire estate. He knelt down on the brick tiles, completely disregarding the expensive fabric of his trousers, and scooped the little girl up into his arms, lifting her high into the air.
"They did wake up, Lily," Marcus said, his eyes bright with deep emotion as he looked into her innocent face. "And do you know why they woke up?"
"Why?" she blinked.
"Because a very brave little girl told a very big secret," Marcus said softly, tapping her nose with his finger. "You saved me, Lily."
Claire walked up beside them, a single tear rolling down her cheek, a beautiful, relieved smile on her face. "Thank you for bringing us back, Mr. Hartwell. And thank you for keeping us safe."
Marcus stood up, holding Lily securely against his hip, and looked at Claire.
"You're never going to have to worry about being safe or working overtime again, Claire," Marcus said, his tone ringing with absolute sincerity. "This morning, my legal team established a permanent trust fund for Lily. Her education, her future, everything is completely secured. And as for you, I’m appointing you as the Executive Director of the new Hartwell Foundation for Injured Children. You'll have an office downtown, a full staff, and a salary that reflects your true worth to this family."
Claire gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Mr. Hartwell... Marcus... I don't know what to say. I can't accept all of this."
"You can, and you will," Marcus smiled, his gaze shifting back to the little girl in his arms. "A three-billion-dollar empire means nothing if you can't protect the people who matter. Lily gave me my life back. This is just the beginning of making sure the world gives her everything she deserves."
Lily looked down at her stuffed rabbit, then back at Marcus, her small face completely serious. "Mr. Marcus?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"My stomach doesn't hurt anymore at all."
May you like
Marcus smiled, pulling both Claire and Lily into a warm, protective embrace as the golden summer sun bathed the garden in light.
"Mine neither, Lily," Marcus whispered against her hair. "Mine neither."
