Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next seven days were a masterclass in psychological warfare.
Marcus continued the charade, faking the ingestion of the pills every morning and evening, hiding them in various pockets, handkerchiefs, and once even dropping them into the soil of a large potted ficus in the hallway.
The physical toll of faking his own deterioration was exhausting. He had to let his legs limp even more during the physical therapy sessions, allowing Dr. Albright to look down at him with that sickening, patronizing pity.
"The degradation is accelerating, Marcus," Albright had said during a Wednesday session, looking at a faked electromyogram reading on his tablet. "I’m afraid the winter accident did more structural damage to the lumbar region than we initially estimated. We should prepare for the reality of permanent confinement."
Victoria had been right there, wiping a fake tear from her eye. "Oh, my poor darling. Don't worry, the Hartwell Dynamics board will understand. I’ll make sure your legacy is protected."
Marcus had merely nodded, playing the role of the broken, defeated billionaire to perfection.
But underneath the table, away from their sight, something miraculous was happening.
By the fifth day of throwing away the poison, Marcus felt a sharp, sudden burning sensation in his left big toe during the middle of the night. It was an intense, white-hot flash of pain that woke him from a dead sleep, sweating and gasping for air.
He hadn't told a soul. He didn't even tell Vance. He kept it as his own private spark of fire.
The poison was leaving his system. His nerves, raw and undamaged by the accident itself, were finally waking up from their chemical coma. Every night, while the rest of the mansion slept, Marcus would grip the sides of his bed, using every ounce of mental energy to command his muscles to twitch, to move, to fight back against the atrophy.
By Sunday night, forty-eight hours before the grand board meeting, he could bend his left knee three inches off the mattress. It was a agonizing, exhausting effort that left him trembling and soaked in sweat, but it was proof.
He wasn't broken. He was alive.
On Monday morning, the day before the annual shareholder meeting at the Hartwell Dynamics headquarters in downtown Chicago, Victoria entered his study with a thick leather bound folder.
"It’s time, Marcus," she said smoothly, setting the folder on his desk. "The legal team finalized the proxy transfer. You just need to sign on the red line on page fourteen. Tomorrow morning, I will stand before the board and take over the voting rights so we can finalize the merger with Vance Capital."
Marcus looked down at the document. The merger with Vance Capital—her family’s firm. It was a complete liquidation of his life's work, turning his cutting-edge robotics company into a hollow shell for her family to strip for parts.
"You've thought of everything, Victoria," Marcus said, picking up the heavy montblanc pen.
"I only want what’s best for you, sweetheart," she said, leaning over his shoulder, her breath warm against his ear. "Sign it, and the weight of the world will be off your shoulders."
Marcus hovered the pen over the paper. He could see his own reflection in the polished glass of his desk. He looked tired, but beneath the fatigue, there was a lethal spark that hadn't been there for six long months.
He pressed the pen to the paper and scribbled his signature. Not his real signature, but a highly sophisticated variation he had practiced—one that looked perfectly identical to the untrained eye, but contained a tiny, specific flaw in the cursive 'M' that his legal counsel would recognize as an international distress signature under corporate law.
Victoria snatched the folder up the moment he finished, her eyes gleaming with a manic, triumphant light she couldn't hide. "Thank you, darling. Rest up tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a historic day for both of us."

As she walked out, Marcus pulled up his secure laptop. He sent a single, coded message to Vance Miller, who was currently stationed at a safe house downtown with Claire and Lily.
THE TRAP IS SPRUNG. THE ANNUAL SHAREHOLDER MEETING STARTS AT 9:00 AM TOMORROW. BRING THE DOCTORS. BRING THE FEDS. IT’S TIME TO WALK.
