Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

Despite the peace that had settled over the estate, the underworld never truly sleeps.

Three weeks before Christmas, Paulie requested an urgent private audience in Victor’s study.

Tessa stood beside the mahogany desk holding a tablet displaying security logs while Paulie dropped a heavy manila envelope onto the blotter.

"What is this?" Victor asked, not looking up as he signed a stack of real estate transfers.

"Intelligence from our contacts in federal custody," Paulie said grimly. "Arthur Harrison—the former chief of staff at Saint Jude Memorial who ratted out the Castellano shipping routes—is cutting a deal with the feds."

Tessa froze. The name Saint Jude Memorial Hospital sent a cold, sharp spike of adrenaline through her chest. It was the exact same hospital where her parents had died, and where her family’s medical debts had first spiraled out of control before the syndicate acquired them.

Victor noticed the sudden tension in her posture. He dropped his pen immediately, turning his full, undivided attention toward Paulie.

"What does Harrison have to do with us?" Victor demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, protective register.

"He doesn't have dirt on us, boss," Paulie replied, shaking his head. "He’s trying to trade information on old financial manipulation rings involving municipal hospital boards and predatory debt collection agencies. Specifically... the firm that legally engineered your family's medical debt seizures back in the day, Tessa."

Tessa’s breath caught. She gripped the edge of the desk. "The firm that took my parents' house... and tried to garnish my wages before I started working here?"

"The very same," Paulie confirmed. "They were operating as a front for corrupt hospital executives laundering kickbacks through syndicate shell accounts. Harrison claims he has the original master ledgers proving how they intentionally trapped low-income families in perpetual debt loops."

Victor stood up slowly from his desk. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"Where is Harrison right now?" Victor asked quietly.

"Federal holding facility downtown. Scheduled for transfer to witness protection on Friday."

Victor turned his head, looking down at Tessa. His dark eyes burned with an absolute, lethal intensity that promised total destruction for anyone who had ever dared to exploit her.

"Tessa," Victor said, his voice smooth and absolute. "Get your coat. We're going to pay a little visit to the federal holding facility."
