Chapter 5 - Shadows on the Docks

The fragile, volatile peace within the Romano estate shattered on a freezing Tuesday night in late November.
Tessa was working late in her office, organizing the payroll ledgers for the private security division, when the front security alarms began to wail.
Warning. Perimeter breach. West Gate.
The shrill electronic klaxon echoed through the cavernous hallways of the estate like a dying animal's scream.
Tessa sprang from her desk, her heart leaping into her throat. Before she could reach the hallway, the heavy doors of Victor’s study flew open.
Victor stepped out into the corridor. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white shirt was open at the collar, and a custom-fitted tactical shoulder holster was strapped securely across his chest, holding a black Sig Sauer P226. There was no trace of the injured man who had collapsed on his couch three weeks ago. He looked like an apex predator ready for war.
"Get in the panic room behind the bookshelves," Victor ordered instantly, his voice sharp and absolute.
"What's happening?" Tessa demanded, grabbing her notepad as instinct urged her to follow him.
"We've been hit," Victor snapped, his eyes flashing with cold fury. "The Castellano family from New York just breached the perimeter with an assault team. Get inside, lock the door, and don't come out for anyone."
Before Tessa could argue, Victor turned on his heel and sprinted down the corridor toward the foyer, where Paulie and half a dozen armed guards were already moving into defensive positions.
The sound of shattering glass echoed through the west wing.
Gunfire erupted.
The sharp, deafening crack of automatic weapons tore through the expensive silence of the estate, followed by the sound of splintering wood and shouted curses.
Tessa’s blood ran cold. She knew she should run to the panic room. She knew staying out in the hallway was a death sentence. But as she heard a familiar voice shouting orders near the front entrance—Paulie’s voice, followed by a grunt of pain—her legs carried her in the opposite direction.
She ran toward the security monitor station hidden behind the master staircase.
Inside the small, dark control room, multiple security screens flickered with horrific clarity.
In the courtyard, men in tactical black gear were swarming the grounds, trading gunfire with Victor’s guards. On the main foyer camera, Victor stood in the center of the marble floor, firing his Sig Sauer with deadly, calculating precision, dropping two attackers before they could even raise their weapons.
Then, Tessa’s breath caught in her throat as she spotted a terrifying detail on camera four.
A lone intruder had bypassed the main firefight, slipping through the side service entrance near the kitchens, carrying a heavy duffel bag that looked suspiciously like an improvised explosive device. His target wasn't the guards in the foyer; it was the structural support columns beneath the west wing library—right below Victor’s private study.
"No," Tessa whispered.
She didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy brass fireplace poker leaning against the control room wall, slipped out of the side door, and crept silently through the shadows of the service corridor.
The intruder was kneeling by the support column, fumbling with a digital timer attached to a bundle of plastic explosives.
Tessa crept up behind him, her hands trembling so badly she could barely grip the heavy metal poker. Her mind screamed at her to run, to hide, to let the professionals handle it. But images flashed through her mind: the exhaustion of the kitchen, the ledger page with Liam's name crossed out, and Victor standing alone in the dark study holding a gun to her neck.
He spared Liam. He spared me.
With a sudden, guttural cry, Tessa swung the heavy brass poker with all her remaining strength, connecting squarely with the back of the intruder’s tactical helmet.
The man let out a stunned grunt, pitching forward onto the marble floor and dropping his detonator.
Tessa didn't wait for him to recover. She raised the poker again and brought it down hard across his shoulder, sending him sprawling into unconsciousness.
She dropped the poker, gasping for air, her hands shaking violently as she reached down to grab the digital timer. The red LED numbers were counting down rapidly: 01:42... 01:41...
She didn't know how to disarm an explosive. She didn't know which wire to cut.
Without thinking, she grabbed the entire bundle of explosives, hauled it into the service elevator, pressed the button for the upper courtyard exit, and watched the doors close as the timer ticked down to 00:55.
She ran back down the service stairs as fast as her legs could carry her, bursting into the main foyer just as the front doors were kicked inward.
Victor was standing by the grand staircase, his gun smoking, breathing heavily. He looked up, spotting Tessa covered in dust, her hair flying wild around her face.
"Tessa! What the hell are you doing out here?" he shouted over the fading echoes of gunfire. "I told you to go to the panic room!"
"The west wing," she panted, pointing frantically toward the service elevator. "Bomb. In the elevator. Going up."
Victor’s eyes widened with sudden, sharp realization. He grabbed her arm, pulling her down flat behind the marble base of the grand staircase just as a muffled, subterranean roar shook the entire estate.
BOOM.
A fireball erupted through the upper service shaft, shattering glass and raining concrete dust and drywall across the foyer. The shockwave rattled the massive crystal chandelier above them, sending glass shards crashing down around the marble floor.
Then, silence returned.
Slowly, Victor raised his head, coughing slightly against the thick grey smoke. He looked down at Tessa, who was curled safely beneath his arm against the stone base of the stairs.
"Are you insane?" Victor demanded, his voice trembling slightly with a raw, uncharacteristic panic. "You could have been killed!"
May you like
"You're welcome," Tessa wheezed, her heart hammering against his chest.
Victor stared at her for three long seconds. Then, abandoning all pretense of cold detachment, he wrapped his arm tightly around her shoulders, pulling her against him in a fierce, protective embrace that left no doubt about what she meant to him.
