PART 4

Three weeks later...

The old house on Independencia Street no longer felt abandoned.

Workers replaced broken roof tiles.

Fresh white paint covered the stained walls.

The smell of damp wood had given way to the scent of sawdust, coffee, and fresh plaster.

Elena sat on the front porch, one hand resting on her growing belly while reviewing paperwork spread across a folding table.

Not divorce papers anymore.

Business reports.

Employee payroll.

Renovation invoices.

Her phone rang.

It was Arturo.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vargas."

"Please," Elena smiled. "Just Elena."

"I have news."

She immediately heard the seriousness in his voice.

"What happened?"

"Rodrigo has filed an emergency petition."

She sighed.

"I expected that."

"He claims your grandmother was manipulated into changing the trust."

Monica looked up from painting a window frame.

"What does he want now?"

Arturo answered calmly.

"He wants the court to suspend all transfers until the divorce is finalized."

Elena leaned back.

"And?"

Arturo chuckled softly.

"The judge denied it this morning."

"Why?"

"Because your grandmother anticipated that possibility."

He paused.

"There is one more recording."

Elena frowned.

"A recording?"

"Yes."

"She left a video statement."

Two days later...

The conference room at the law office was unusually quiet.

Rodrigo arrived wearing an expensive navy suit.

His confidence looked forced now.

Beside him sat Isabela.

Eight months pregnant.

Nervous.

Avoiding everyone's eyes.

Across the table sat Elena and Monica.

Arturo entered carrying a laptop.

"The court has authorized us to present additional evidence."

Rodrigo rolled his eyes.

"Another letter?"

"No."

"A video."

Arturo pressed play.

The screen flickered.

An elderly woman appeared.

Doña Teresa.

Her silver hair was neatly combed.

She wore a blue cardigan Elena recognized from old family photographs.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this..."

"...then Rodrigo ignored every lesson I tried to teach him."

The room became perfectly still.

"I raised my grandson after his parents died."

"I loved him."

"I forgave many mistakes."

"But there is one thing I cannot forgive."

"A man who abandons his pregnant wife."

Rodrigo lowered his eyes.

Doña Teresa continued.

"If Rodrigo is sitting in this room claiming he deserves my inheritance..."

"...he does not."

"He already received the greatest inheritance I could offer."

"My love."

"He wasted it."

She smiled sadly.

"Elena..."

"If you are watching this beside him..."

"...I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry I did not see his true character sooner."

"You deserved honesty."

"You deserved loyalty."

"You deserved a family."

The room remained silent except for Rodrigo's uneven breathing.

Then Doña Teresa lifted a small key toward the camera.

"There is one final gift."

"The safe deposit box at Banco Nacional."

"The key is hidden beneath the false bottom of my sewing cabinet."

"It belongs only to Elena."

Rodrigo suddenly stood.

"This is ridiculous!"

The judge's clerk looked at him sharply.

"Sit down, Mr. Salcedo."

He slowly obeyed.

The video continued.

"I know Rodrigo will believe I chose money over him."

"He's wrong."

"I chose character."

"There is a difference."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Not immediately.

Finally, Isabela broke the silence.

She turned toward Rodrigo.

"You told me your grandmother adored you."

He said nothing.

"You told me Elena stole everything."

Still nothing.

Then she quietly removed the engagement ring from her finger and placed it on the conference table.

"I can't build a family on someone else's lies."

Without another word, she stood and walked out.

Rodrigo watched the door close behind her.

For the second time in a month...

He lost someone who had believed him.

Arturo closed the laptop.

"There is nothing further."

Rodrigo whispered,

"What... is inside the safe deposit box?"

Arturo looked at Elena.

"Only she is authorized to open it."

Three days later...

Elena stood inside the quiet bank vault.

The manager unlocked a small steel box.

Inside were several velvet pouches.

Old photographs.

A leather journal.

And one sealed envelope.

On the front, in Doña Teresa's handwriting, were eight simple words:

"Open this only after your child is born safely."

Elena gently placed her hand over the envelope.

She smiled through quiet tears.

Some gifts...

May you like

Were worth waiting for.
