Chapter 5 - Six Months Later

Six months later, the spring sun poured through the wide windows of the Rivera home, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished hardwood floors.

In the living room, soft baby laughter bounced off the walls.

Little Elena—named after her grandmother on Mariana’s side—was six months old now, a bright-eyed, cheerful baby with a full head of dark curls and a laugh that could chase away any storm. She sat in the middle of a plush play mat, babbling happily as she tried to catch a wooden rattle dangling from her gym frame.

Santiago sat at the kitchen island, reviewing architectural blueprints for a major commercial construction project he had recently landed as a senior partner at his firm. He had scaled back his weekend hours, prioritizing evenings and weekends at home with his wife and daughter.

Mariana walked into the kitchen carrying a tray of fresh fruit and warm pastries, her movements light, effortless, and entirely free of pain.

Santiago looked up from his blueprints, watching her walk across the room. He stood up, walked over, and wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You know what today is, right?" Santiago murmured against her neck.

Mariana smiled, turning in his embrace to face him. "Of course I do. It’s six months since our lives officially began."

"Six months since I finally woke up," Santiago corrected gently, kissing her forehead.

From the living room, baby Elena let out a happy squeal, as if joining in the conversation.

Santiago and Mariana both laughed, walking over to the mat to scoop their daughter up into their arms together. As they held her, wrapped in a bright, cheerful yellow blanket under the morning sun, Santiago looked around his home—tranquil, secure, and overflowing with genuine love.

The past was a locked door with the key thrown away. Ahead of them lay only open space, bright horizons, and a future built to last.
