Chapter 4 - The Quiet House

When the front door closed behind them, the silence inside the house was absolute.

It wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of fear and tension that had choked the rooms for months. It was a clean, light, breathable silence—the sound of a home finally reclaimed by the people who loved it.

Santiago walked back into the kitchen.

The countertops were still messy from the night before, but instead of feeling overwhelmed, he felt a surge of purposeful energy. He rolled up his sleeves, filled the sink with hot, soapy water, and began washing the dishes his wife had been forced to scrub while crying in the dark.

Half an hour later, soft footsteps padded down the stairs.

Mariana appeared in the kitchen doorway, wearing a clean linen dress, her hair brushed, her face washed and glowing with a soft, natural warmth. She stopped when she saw Santiago standing at the sink, a white dish towel slung over his shoulder, scrubbing a frying pan with intense focus.

"Santi... what are you doing?" she asked softly, a hint of a smile touching her lips. "That’s my job."

Santiago set the pan down, dried his hands on the towel, and walked over to her. He wrapped his arms gently around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, pressing his cheek against her hair.

"Not anymore," he whispered. "From now on, we share everything. No more servants, no more uninvited guests, and no more shadows."

Mariana rested her hands on his shoulders, burying her face in his neck. A soft, contented sigh escaped her lips. "They’re really gone?"

"They’re gone," Santiago confirmed, pulling back to look into her dark, beautiful eyes. "And our daughter is going to grow up in a home where she is safe, respected, and loved unconditionally."

She smiled, reaching up to cup his cheek with her palm. "I love you, Santiago."

"I love you more, Mari," he replied, kissing her softly. "Now, sit down at the table. I’m making breakfast."
