Chapter 5 - The Heir of Vale Tower

The ancestral estate of the Vale family in Greenwich, Connecticut, looked less like a home and more like a fortress designed to withstand a medieval siege. High iron gates, stone perimeter walls, and armed patrols kept the rest of the world at a safe, terrified distance.

At 3:00 a.m., a black armored SUV smashed through the front gates without slowing down, the heavy iron bars buckling under the impact like toothpicks.

Inside the grand limestone foyer of the main manor house, Arthur Vale sat in a high-backed leather armchair by the roaring fireplace, holding a crystal snifter of brandy. He was eighty-four years old, his silver hair neatly styled, his cold, aristocratic eyes fixed on the double doors as they were violently kicked open.

Sebastian walked in, his suit ruined, blood drying on his temple, his expression darker and more terrifying than anything the old man had seen in fifty years of ruthless corporate warfare.

Behind Sebastian walked Rocco, holding a heavy metal briefcase, while I stood just behind them, holding Owen’s hand, with Noah and Ivy safely cocooned in the arms of two trusted security guards.

Arthur didn't flinch. He took a slow sip of his brandy, setting the glass down on the side table with a faint clink.

"You've made a terrible mess of your evening, Sebastian," Arthur said, his voice dry and parchment-thin, carrying the effortless condescension of a man who believed he owned the world. "Bringing street trash into this house... I expected better of a Vale."

Sebastian stopped ten feet away. He didn't yell. He didn't make a theatrical gesture. He simply reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the battered, red-stamped photocopy of my letter, and tossed it onto the Persian rug at his grandfather’s feet.

"Your men tried to clean up the last loose end in Brooklyn tonight," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing ice. "They failed."

Arthur glanced down at the paper on the floor, then back up at his grandson. "You were meant to marry Clarissa Hart. You were meant to secure the Atlantic shipping lanes. Instead, you're dragging three bastards into a bloodline that doesn't need charity cases."

"They aren't charity cases," Sebastian said, taking a step closer. "They are the next sole heirs to the entire Vale estate."

Arthur let out a dry, crackling laugh. "You think the board will accept them? You think the trust fund allows for illegitimate children born to a florist?"

"The trust fund allows whatever the majority shareholder dictates," Sebastian replied smoothly.

He nodded to Rocco.

Rocco stepped forward, popped the latches on the metal briefcase, and dumped a thick stack of legal documents onto the grandfather’s lap.

"What is this?" Arthur snapped, picking up the top pages.

"That," Sebastian said, "is a controlling majority of voting shares in Vale Industries, transferred legally and irrevocably into my name as of midnight, backed by the federal compliance audit I initiated against your offshore accounts this afternoon."

Arthur’s face went from pale to a sickly, mottled gray. He flipped through the pages frantically, his hands trembling with sudden, unadulterated panic. "You... you can't do this. I built this company from the ash of the depression! You're destroying fifty years of legacy!"

"I'm saving it from a dying dinosaur," Sebastian said coldly. "And as for your legacy..."

He turned around, walking over to where I stood with the children. He knelt down beside Owen, Ivy, and Noah, his harsh, dangerous expression melting away into something impossibly tender as he placed a large, warm hand on Owen’s small shoulder.

"Look at them, Grandfather," Sebastian said, looking back over his shoulder with eyes burning with fierce, unyielding pride. "They are the new legacy of Vale Tower. And you will never, ever touch them again."

Arthur Vale sat back in his chair, defeated, his chest heaving as the crushing weight of his own ruthless empire finally collapsed around him.
