Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary

Six months later—June 2027.

The harsh winter cold had completely vanished from Illinois, replaced by the brilliant warmth of a summer afternoon.

The eighteen-acre Cross estate was transformed. The old security fences around the eastern courtyard had been taken down, replaced by sprawling green gardens, winding stone pathways, and open lawns shaded by ancient oak trees.

At the center of the estate stood a newly constructed wooden structure—a state-of-the-art working dog rescue and rehabilitation facility named The Vance Sanctuary.

Children from local orphanages and community centers walked along the grass under the supervision of professional trainers, playing with rescued protection dogs that had been given a second chance at life.

Sitting on a wooden bench near the garden pond was Maya, wearing a bright yellow summer dress, her brown hair tied back with a blue ribbon. She held a small wooden whistle around her neck.

Beside her, his black coat gleaming under the bright summer sun, lay Phantom. His massive head rested comfortably across Maya's lap, his eyes closed as she gently stroked his soft ears.

Holden Cross walked down the stone path toward them, wearing a relaxed linen shirt and trousers, holding two ice cream cones in his hands.

"Strawberry for you," Holden said warmly, handing a cone to Maya as he sat down beside her on the bench.

"Thank you, Holden," Maya smiled brightly, taking a bite.

Phantom opened one amber eye, looking at Holden, and let out a soft, contented huff before returning to his nap on Maya's lap.

"The legal adoption papers were finalized this morning, Maya," Holden mentioned softly, a deep, quiet emotion touching his eyes. "You are officially a Cross now."

Maya stopped eating her ice cream, looking up at the man who had turned his dark world upside down just to give her a home.

"Does that mean I get to stay here forever?" she asked softly.

Holden reached out, gently tucking a lock of hair behind her ear, his hand broad and protective.

"Forever," Holden answered firmly. "You, me, and Phantom. This is our home now."

May you like

Maya smiled, leaning her head against Holden's arm, while the giant Cane Corso shifted closer, wrapping his broad body around them both like a silent, eternal guardian.

The monster that everyone had once feared had finally found his peace—not in violence, but in the heart of the little girl who knew his true name.
