Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Perimeter

Two weeks passed. The harsh Chicago winter deepened, covering the eighteen-acre Cross estate in a thick blanket of pristine white snow.

The atmosphere within the compound had undergone a startling transformation. The eastern courtyard was no longer a feared killing ground. Maya could be seen running through the snow, wearing a warm red winter coat, red boots, and a matching hat that Holden had personally ordered for her.

Beside her, Phantom bounded through the drifts like a joyful puppy, chasing tennis balls and hovering over the little girl with fierce, maternal protectiveness.

Holden watched from his second-floor office window, a rare, genuine smile gracing his severe features. His staff—hardened men who had spent years treading lightly around their cold employer—noticed the shift. The mansion felt less like a fortress of dark business and more like a home.

However, the peace was shattered at 2:15 AM on a dark Tuesday morning.

The estate's primary perimeter alarms didn't sound—a clear indication that the intrusion was an inside job or executed by professionals using high-level military jammer tech.

Inside her warm bedroom, Maya was awakened by a subtle shift in the air.

Phantom, who now slept on a soft rug at the foot of her bed every night, was already standing upright, his body tense, his ears pinned back, his lips pulled away from his teeth in a silent, terrifying snarl.

Before Maya could speak, the window glass shattered inward.

Two men wearing night-vision goggles and black tactical gear with red snake patches on their shoulders dropped into the room. One carried a silenced carbine, while the other pulled a heavy nylon capture net from his belt.

"Secure the kid!" the first man barked into his comms. "Thorne wants her alive—she's the only witness to the Vance arson!"

Phantom didn't wait for a command.

With an explosive roar that shook the very foundations of the room, the hundred-and-thirty-pound beast launched himself through the air.

He struck the first intruder with the force of a speeding vehicle, his jaws locking around the man's forearm, shattering tactical armor and bone simultaneously. The man shrieked in agony as he was slammed violently against the hardwood floor.

"Shoot the dog! Shoot the—!" the second intruder yelled, raising his silenced weapon toward Phantom.

Before he could pull the trigger, the bedroom door was kicked entirely off its hinges.

Holden Cross stood in the doorway, framed by the hall light, a heavy custom pistol held in a firm two-handed grip.

Two suppressed shots cracked through the room. The second intruder dropped to the floor instantly, his weapon sliding across the rug.

Within seconds, Marcus and four security officers swarmed the room, securing the surviving mercenary while Phantom stood over him, his chest heaving, his mouth stained red, waiting for a single sign of movement to finish the job.

Holden rushed to the bed, picking Maya up into his arms and wrapping her in a heavy blanket.

"Are you hurt, Maya?" Holden asked, his voice tight with an intense, protective panic he hadn't felt in decades.

"I'm okay," Maya whispered, clinging to his neck. "Phantom saved me."

Holden looked down at the dog, then looked at Marcus, his face turning into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.

"They breached my house," Holden whispered, his deep voice trembling with lethal intent. "Thorne thought he could come into my home and take my family."

"We intercepted their comms, Mr. Cross," Marcus said, checking the unconscious mercenary's earpiece. "Thorne's main strike force is waiting at the abandoned industrial docks three miles south. They were planning to move Maya out of the state by boat tonight."

Holden adjusted his grip on Maya, holding her close before handing her to a trusted female staff member who had entered the room.

"Keep her in the safe room," Holden ordered firmly.

He pulled a heavy black tactical coat over his shoulders and checked his weapon's magazine.

"Marcus," Holden commanded coldly. "Mobilize the entire team. We aren't defending tonight. We're hunting."
