CHAPTER 1: THE EVIDENCE

I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the bruises on Elena's body.
The woman I loved had spent six months living in fear while I was thousands of miles away believing she was safe.
By sunrise, my anger had hardened into something colder.
A plan.

I kissed Elena's forehead before leaving the bedroom.
"Trust me," I whispered.
"I'm going to fix this."
She looked at me with tired eyes.
"You don't understand how much power they have now."
"Then they'll learn how much they lost when they underestimated me."
Downstairs, Mother and Ricardo were already having breakfast.
They looked relaxed.
Comfortable.
Like they owned everything.
Ricardo smiled.
"Brother. Welcome home."
I smiled back.
For the first time in my life, it wasn't genuine.
I spent the next week pretending nothing was wrong.
I laughed at their jokes.
Attended meetings.
Played the role of the grateful son and brother.
Meanwhile, I quietly gathered evidence.
Copies of bank records.
Property transfers.
Forged signatures.
Security footage.
Every document pointed to the same truth.
They had systematically stolen everything from Elena.
But the worst discovery came from our former attorney.
After enough pressure, he finally confessed.
Ricardo hadn't simply manipulated Elena.
He had threatened her.
If she refused to sign, he would use his influence to have me removed from military service under false accusations.
Elena believed she was protecting me.
She sacrificed everything to keep me safe.
When I told her the truth, she cried in my arms.
For the first time since my return, I saw a spark of the old Elena.
And that gave me even more reason to fight.
Then I found the final piece of evidence.
A recording.
My mother's voice.
Clear as day.
"Once Alejandro is gone long enough, she'll sign anything."
Ricardo laughed.
"And when he gets back?"
"He won't have anything left."
I listened to that recording ten times.
Then I smiled.
May you like
The war was over.
They just didn't know it yet.
