Chapter 4 - The Investigation

The days following the arrest were a whirlwind of interviews, legal proceedings, and revelations. The hospital was under fire, as it was discovered that a group of high-level administrators had been taking kickbacks to allow Caroline and her accomplices to manipulate birth records for years.
Emma and Ruth were finally home, back in the quiet, safe cottage where the only thing that mattered was their shared bond. But Emma found it hard to sleep. She kept looking at Mr. Buns, the rabbit who had held her truth, and then out the window at the stars.
One evening, Grandpa arrived with a folder of photographs.
"I've been working with a private investigator," he said, spreading the pictures out on the kitchen table. They weren't of the crime; they were of a young girl living in a foster home three states away. She had Emma’s eyes, Emma’s nose, and the same small, curious tilt to her head.
"Her name is Sarah," Grandpa said gently. "She’s been through a lot, Emma. She doesn't know about us yet."
Ruth touched the photo, her eyes tearing up. "She’s alive. She’s safe."

Emma looked at the picture of her sister. The fear she had carried for so long, the fear that she was an asset, a prize to be stolen, faded. She was no longer a piece of a game; she was a sister. And she had a family that was growing, not shrinking.
