Chapter 2 - The Double Bassinet
The room went deathly silent as a video file began to play on the nurse’s screen. It was grainy, black-and-white security footage—old, dating back nearly a decade. The timestamp in the corner showed the neonatal ward of the very hospital they were standing in.
On screen, a younger, much softer-looking Caroline stood beside two newborn bassinets. She was whispering to a man who stood in the shadows—a man whose face was obscured by a heavy coat.
"There were two babies?" Ruth whispered, her voice trembling as the guards loosened their hold on her.
The video continued. It showed Caroline carefully swapping the tags on the two infants. One baby, wearing a pink-striped blanket, was moved to a different wing of the hospital; the other, the one in the plain white swaddle, was placed in the bassinet labeled Sterling.
"She isn't just trying to steal the trust," Mrs. Gable gasped, her eyes wide as she realized the implications. "She’s covering up a kidnapping. Or a replacement."
Caroline’s composure had completely evaporated. Her face was a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. "Delete that! That’s falsified evidence! It’s a trick!"
"It’s not a trick, Caroline," a new voice boomed from the doorway.
The security guards stepped aside to reveal a tall, elderly man with a cane—Grandpa. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp. He stood behind a man in a police uniform who was already clicking his radio to call for backup.
"I’ve spent eight years watching you, Caroline," Grandpa said, his voice echoing in the small room. "Watching you wait for Emma to turn eight, when the trust fund provisions finally kick in. You thought you were the only one who knew about the swap."

Caroline backed toward the window, her hand fumbling for her purse, but the police officer was already moving toward her.
Emma felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up to see Ruth, finally free from the guards, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace. "I’m here," Ruth sobbed. "I’m here, baby."
