Chapter 10 - THE VALUATION OF TRUTH

The rain had returned, but this time, I didn't feel the cold.

I sat in my new office on the top floor of the Blackwood Manufacturing headquarters, looking out at the Seattle skyline. The room was bright, filled with plants, large windows, and a beautifully restored portrait of my Aunt Clara hanging on the main wall.

On my desk lay the final divorce decree, signed by a judge earlier that morning.

I was no longer Vivienne Blackwood. I was Vivienne Vance.

My phone buzzed. It was a news alert on my screen.

FORMER CEO DANIEL BLACKWOOD SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR GRAND LARCENY AND WIRE FRAUD.

I stared at the headline for a long, quiet moment. I didn't feel anger; I didn't feel triumph. I only felt a deep, profound sense of peace.

The path of a forensic auditor is often lonely. We spend our lives looking at the mistakes, the greed, and the lies of others, searching for the truth hidden beneath the layers of deception.

But the numbers never lie.

They had called me useless because I didn't scream, because I didn't boast, and because I knew how to wait.

They had forgotten that the most powerful person in the room is never the one making the most noise. It is the one who holds the ledger.

I closed my laptop, stood up, and walked over to the window, watching the rain fall over the city. I was whole, I was free, and as I looked out at the bright, clean world before me, I knew that the future finally belonged to me.
