Chapter 5 - Epilogue: The Longest Lease

Six months later, the grounds of the Romano estate looked entirely different.

The heavy black silk was gone forever. In its place, the courtyard echoed with the sound of children laughing, ducks splashing in the restored marble fountain, and the bright, cheerful chatter of a family learning how to heal.

The syndicate had undergone a massive, bloody purge. The corrupt board members were either in federal custody or fleeing across international borders, and Alessandro had restructured what remained into a legitimate global logistics and investment firm. He no longer ruled through fear; he led through absolute, unyielding resilience.

In the sunroom, the afternoon light poured through the tall windows, warming the hardwood floors.

Alessandro sat in his wheelchair, though a pair of heavy-duty leg braces leaned against the wall nearby—a testament to months of brutal, agonizing physical therapy that was finally starting to show miraculous results.

Lily sat cross-legged on his lap, holding a brand-new, beautifully bound copy of Make Way for Ducklings.

“And then,” Alessandro read aloud, his voice rich with warmth, “Mr. and Mrs. Mallard were very happy to be back together with their eight ducklings.”

“And me!” Lily chimed in, pointing a finger at her own chest. “I’m the ninth duckling.”

Alessandro chuckled, wrapping his arms securely around her. “Of course. The most important duckling of all.”

I stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a cup of black tea in my hand, watching the two of them. When Alessandro raised his eyes, catching my gaze across the room, the shadows that had haunted him for three years were entirely gone.

He didn't ask her for a borrowed day anymore.

Because somewhere between the old list in the drawer and the little girl in secondhand shoes who saved his life, the temporary lease had turned into a permanent home.

“Elena,” Alessandro called out softly, patting the empty space beside him on the sofa. “Come sit. We have to plan our weekend trip to the duck pond.”

I smiled, set my tea down, and walked across the room to join my family.
