Chapter 3 - The Scaffolding Crumbles

By dawn, Dr. Mei Lin—a trusted independent physician smuggled into the estate through the staff entrance—had pumped Alessandro’s stomach and administered counter-agents. Alessandro lay pale and exhausted against his pillows, but his mind was crystal clear for the first time in months.
I stood beside the bed, holding the crumpled foil packet in my palm. Marco sat in the armchair across the room, wearing his usual impeccable dark suit, his expression a mask of professional concern.
“I cannot believe the kitchen staff let contaminated ingredients near Mr. Romano’s tea,” Marco said smoothly, his voice laced with practiced sorrow. “I will personally fire the entire catering crew today.”
“It wasn't the kitchen staff, Marco,” Alessandro said. His voice was quiet, but it carried the absolute, freezing weight of a man who had just woken from a three-year nightmare.
Marco blinked, tilting his head. “Sir?”
Alessandro turned his head slowly on the pillow, fixing his dark eyes on his second-in-command. “The poison wasn't in the tea leaves. It was in the capsules you hand-delivered to me every single morning.”
The room went dead silent. The grandfather clock in the hallway ticked loudly, marking the seconds.
Marco didn't flinch. He didn't stutter. Slowly, the sorrowful mask melted away, replaced by something cold, calculating, and deeply unsettling. He crossed his legs, resting his hands on his knees.
“You always were too observant for your own good, Alessandro,” Marco said softly, his tone shifting from subservient employee to chilling equal. “Though it took a housekeeper finding a discarded wrapper to wake you up. Pathetic, really. For three years, I’ve kept this entire organization running while you sat in that chair feeling sorry for yourself.”
“You...” Alessandro’s chest heaved with rage. “Isabella and Sophia... was that you?”
Marco smiled, a cruel, thin-lipped expression. “They were loose ends. Isabella was starting to ask questions about the offshore accounts. She wanted you to walk away from the syndicate. And Sophia? Well, children talk. She saw me meeting with our primary rivals behind the east gate the night before the bomb. I couldn't exactly let her grow up to tell her daddy.”
A suffocating fury filled the room. Alessandro tried to lunge forward from the bed, but his paralyzed limbs betrayed him, and he collapsed back against the mattress with a ragged gasp.
Marco stood up, smoothing his jacket. He pulled a sleek, suppressed pistol from his inner breast pocket and leveled it directly at Alessandro’s chest.
“It’s a shame,” Marco murmured. “The story writes itself, really. Broken man loses his mind, overdoses on his own medication, and leaves the empire in the hands of his loyal brother. The board will vote in my favor by tomorrow noon.”

He shifted the barrel slightly, aiming it toward me. “And as for the clever little housekeeper and her brat? Well, tragic collateral damage during a break-in. Such a dangerous neighborhood.”
My heart hammered against my ribs. I stepped instinctively in front of the bed, shielding Alessandro with my body, my mind racing for an escape that didn't exist. There were no guards outside—Marco had already given them the morning off under the guise of estate maintenance. We were completely trapped.
