Chapter 3 - The Truth Comes OutJudge Whitman removed her glasses.
She stared at Daniel for several long seconds.
"Mr. Carter..."
Her voice was calm.
"Did you make these statements?"
Daniel swallowed.
"They've been taken out of context."
"What context makes this acceptable?"
He had no answer.
His attorney slowly lowered her eyes.
The judge turned toward Lucas.
"Why didn't you tell your mother?"
Lucas looked at Emily.
"I didn't want Mom to be sad."
Emily covered her mouth.
Lucas continued quietly.
"Dad always said nobody would believe her."
He reached into his backpack.
"I brought something else."
He handed the bailiff a small notebook.
"My diary."
The judge read silently.
Every page described weekends at Daniel's house.
Dad yelling because Mason spilled juice.
Dad calling Mom "crazy."
Dad telling the twins to report everything Mom did.
Dad saying they would lose their toys if they wanted to stay with Mom.
The final page simply read:
"Mom hugs us when we're scared.
Dad tells us to stop crying."
Even the court reporter paused to wipe away tears.
Judge Whitman looked toward Mason.
"You don't have to speak unless you want to."
Mason nodded nervously.
"I just..."
He took a shaky breath.
"I sleep better at Mom's house."
"Why?"

"Because Mom checks if we're okay before she goes to bed."
The courtroom fell silent once again.
