Chapter 2 - The RecordingThe courtroom became so quiet that the faint hum of the air conditioner seemed deafening.

Lucas looked at the judge with trembling hands.

"I only wanted someone to know the truth."

Judge Eleanor Whitman nodded gently.

"You may play it."

Daniel shot to his feet.

"Your Honor, I object!"

"On what grounds?" the judge asked calmly.

"My son doesn't understand what he's doing."

Lucas turned toward his father.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

Those words pierced the room.

The judge looked at the bailiff.

"Proceed."

Lucas pressed the Play button.

Static crackled for a moment.

Then Daniel's unmistakable voice filled the courtroom.

"If we make your mother look unstable, the judge will give us everything."

Emily's heart stopped.

Another voice followed—Daniel's attorney.

"She cries easily. That's enough. Keep provoking her. If she loses her temper in court, we've already won."

A long silence.

Then Daniel laughed.

"The boys don't matter. Once I get custody, she'll never be able to ask for child support again."

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

Lucas lowered his head.

"I recorded it when Dad forgot I was upstairs."

Daniel's face turned ghostly white.

"That recording is illegal!"

Judge Whitman looked directly at him.

"Whether it's ultimately admissible is one question."

She paused.

"But your reaction is very revealing."

Lucas continued.

"There was more."

He pressed Play again.

Daniel's voice returned.

"Lucas is too sensitive. Mason cries too much. Boarding school will fix both of them."

Another laugh.

"Children are easier to manage when they're afraid of disappointing you."

Mason buried his face against his aunt's shoulder.

Emily quietly wiped away tears.

Not because she was losing.

Because her sons had carried this burden alone.
