Chapter 3 – Respect Cannot Be Inherited

The groom, Ethan Whitmore, slowly stood.

He walked over to me and extended his hand.

"It is an honor to finally meet you."

I shook it.

"The honor is mine."

Margaret smiled warmly.

"Nora refused every shortcut I offered."

"I invited her to partner with our hotel group years ago."

"She insisted on earning every contract through performance."

My father looked genuinely confused.

"Why didn't you ever tell us?"

I smiled gently.

"You never asked."

My mother lowered her eyes.

For the first time in years, she had no clever response.

One investor leaned toward me.

"Your company handles commercial properties?"

"We're expanding nationally next year," I replied.

Business cards immediately began appearing around the table.

People who had ignored me all evening suddenly wanted meetings.

Partnerships.

Advice.

I quietly declined.

"I'm here to celebrate my sister."

Not to negotiate.

Margaret reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"Success doesn't make someone worthy."

"It simply reveals who recognized their worth too late."

Those words seemed to echo through the ballroom.

Even Lila looked ashamed.

She whispered,

"I'm sorry, Nora."

May you like

I smiled.

"I know."
