Chapter 2 – The Woman Everyone Overlooked
The silence stretched across the ballroom.
Margaret Whitmore kept looking at me as if she were trying to remember something important.
Then her face lit up.
"Of course," she said. "You're Nora Hayes."
I smiled politely.
"It's been a long time."
Richard frowned.
"You know each other?"
Margaret laughed softly.
"Know her?"
She turned toward the table.
"Three years ago, one of my boutique hotels was about to lose its five-star certification because of repeated sanitation failures."
Every guest listened.
"My management company couldn't solve the problem."
"Then someone recommended a young business owner named Nora Hayes."
My mother's smile disappeared.
Margaret continued.
"She didn't simply clean the hotel."
"She redesigned the entire operations system."
"Within six months, customer satisfaction reached its highest level in company history."
She looked directly at me.
"I've recommended Blue Haven Services to every luxury property I own ever since."
The room became eerily quiet.
My father blinked.
"Blue Haven..."
"The company with contracts across the city?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
He stared at me.
"I thought you cleaned houses."
"I do."
"And hotels."
"And medical offices."
"And executive buildings."
"I also employ one hundred and thirty-seven people."
A fork slipped from someone's hand.
Lila looked at me in complete disbelief.
"You own Blue Haven?"
"I started it with one bucket, two mops, and an old van."
No one spoke.
