CHAPTER 6 – A NEW BEGINNING (Ending)

One year later, Lily celebrated her third birthday.

This time there were no extravagant decorations.

No fake smiles.

No people pretending to care.

Just a small picnic in the park.

A homemade cake.

A few close friends.

And endless laughter.

As Lily ran through the grass chasing bubbles, she turned and waved at me.

"Mommy! Look!"

I watched her laughing beneath the afternoon sun, healthy, fearless, and free.

For the first time since that terrible day, I allowed myself to breathe without fear.

Some people asked if I regretted cutting ties with my own family.

I always gave the same answer.

"The day they chose their pride over my child's life, they stopped being my family."

Real family doesn't silence your fear.

Real family doesn't protect an abuser.

Real family saves a child.

As I picked Lily up and held her close, she wrapped her tiny arms around my neck and whispered,

"I love you, Mommy."

I kissed the top of her head.

"I'll spend the rest of my life making sure you're always safe."

May you like

And this time...

I knew she would be.
