CHAPTER 3 – THE TRUTH COMES OUT

Paramedics burst through the front door.
One team treated Lily.
Another wrapped a bandage around my bleeding head.
An officer separated Brooke and Margaret from the guests.
"What happened here?"
Brooke smiled nervously.
"She's emotionally unstable. Her child just had an allergic reaction."
Before I could answer, Daniel spoke.
"That's a lie."
The room fell silent.
"I watched that woman hit her sister with a bottle."
Several guests slowly nodded.
Another woman quietly admitted she had heard Brooke brag earlier that afternoon.
"I finally got that crying kid to shut up."
The paramedics examined an open medicine bottle found in the guest room.
It wasn't children's medicine.
It contained prescription sleeping pills.
Far too dangerous for a toddler.
The officer's expression hardened.
He looked directly at Brooke.
"Did you give these to the child?"
May you like
For the first time all afternoon...
Brooke stopped smiling.
