Chapter 5 – The Family Secret

Detective Monroe closed the hospital room door behind her.

She waited until Lily had drifted back to sleep before placing a small digital recorder on the bedside table.

"I need you to hear this," she said quietly.

I wiped away my tears and nodded.

She pressed Play.

Margaret's voice filled the room.

"Did you bring enough?"

Then Brooke answered.

"Half the tablets are crushed into the juice already."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Every word was another knife in my heart.

The recording continued.

"Hazel deserves one birthday without that little crybaby."

I closed my eyes.

My own mother.

My own sister.

They had spoken about my daughter as though she were nothing more than an inconvenience.

Then came the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

"If something goes wrong... everyone will think Emily was being careless."

I couldn't breathe.

"They planned it," I whispered.

Detective Monroe nodded.

"That's what it sounds like."

"No..."

I shook my head slowly.

"This wasn't the first time."

The detective looked at me carefully.

"What do you mean?"

I stared at Lily sleeping peacefully beside me.

"For years, they kept telling everyone I was unstable."

"They said I imagined things."

"They convinced relatives I was overprotective."

"They wanted everyone to believe I was an unfit mother."

Detective Monroe wrote several notes.

"That pattern could become important."

A gentle knock interrupted us.

A uniformed officer entered carrying a cardboard evidence box.

"We finished searching the house."

He placed the box on the table.

"These belonged to your daughter."

Inside were Lily's tiny shoes.

Her favorite stuffed bunny.

Her yellow cardigan.

And a pink plastic cup with cartoon butterflies printed on the side.

The detective froze.

"That's the cup?"

I nodded.

"Lily carried it everywhere."

The detective carefully sealed it again.

"We're sending it to the crime lab."

"If Brooke crushed pills into her drink, there may still be residue."

Before she finished speaking, her phone rang.

She listened silently for nearly a minute.

Then her expression changed completely.

"What?"

She stood up.

"Are you certain?"

She ended the call and looked directly at me.

"The laboratory rushed a preliminary test."

My heart pounded.

"What did they find?"

"It wasn't only Benadryl."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"They found traces of a prescription sleeping medication."

I felt the room begin to spin.

"Someone mixed two different drugs together."

The detective's voice became even quieter.

"The dosage could have stopped Lily's breathing."

Tears blurred my vision again.

"They weren't trying to make her sleep."

"No."

Detective Monroe slowly shook her head.

"They gave your daughter enough medication to kill her."

Silence filled the hospital room.

The only sound was the steady beeping of Lily's heart monitor.

After several long moments, Detective Monroe spoke again.

"There's something else."

She opened another file.

"We searched Brooke's home after obtaining a warrant."

"What did you find?"

"A notebook."

She slid a photograph across the table.

On one page was a handwritten list.

At the top it read:

Things Emily Doesn't Deserve

Beneath it were several items.

  • Mom's house.

  • Dad's inheritance.

  • Family business.

  • Lily.

I stared at the final word.

Lily.

My daughter's name.

Written as though she were a possession.

As though my own sister believed my child was something to take away from me.

Detective Monroe folded the photograph.

"I don't think this attack was about a birthday party."

"It appears someone has been targeting you for a very long time."

I looked down at Lily.

Her tiny fingers still wrapped around mine.

At that moment, I made a silent promise.

No matter who stood against us...

No matter how many secrets my family still carried...

May you like

I would expose every single one.

And I would never let anyone hurt my daughter again.
