Chapter 3 – The Recording That Changed Everything

Sirens pierced the afternoon silence.

For the first time since I had found Lily upstairs, hope flickered inside me.

The front door burst open as two paramedics rushed inside carrying emergency equipment.

"Two-year-old female, possible overdose!" Ethan shouted.

"They gave her adult medication!"

The paramedics immediately laid Lily on the floor.

One checked her airway while another attached a tiny oxygen mask over her face.

"Pulse is weak," one medic said.

"Respirations are dangerously low."

"Hurry!"

I knelt beside them, blood still dripping from the wound on my head.

"Please save my baby," I begged.

One paramedic looked at me with concern.

"Ma'am, you're injured too."

"I'm fine."

I wasn't.

The room spun around me, but nothing mattered except Lily.

Behind us, Brooke folded her arms.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered. "She just wanted attention."

Every guest turned toward her in disbelief.

"You hit her with a bottle," one woman whispered.

Brooke shrugged.

"She was hysterical."

Margaret quickly stepped in.

"My daughter didn't mean it. Everyone needs to calm down."

But the damage had already been done.

Red and blue lights flashed through the windows as police officers entered the house.

Officer Daniels looked around at the broken glass, the blood on the floor, and the unconscious little girl.

"What happened here?"

Before Brooke could answer, Ethan stepped forward.

"I recorded everything."

The room fell silent.

"You... what?" Brooke asked, suddenly pale.

"I started recording after she refused to call 911."

He handed his phone to the officer.

The video began playing.

Brooke's voice filled the room.

"She was ruining Hazel's party."

Then...

"I gave her something to make her sleep."

The guests gasped.

The recording continued.

Everyone watched Brooke smash the wine bottle against my head.

Then Margaret's voice echoed through the speakers.

"If that little girl had stayed home, none of this would've happened."

Officer Daniels slowly lowered the phone.

His expression hardened.

"Mrs. Collins," he said to Brooke.

"I'm placing you under arrest for aggravated assault and child endangerment."

"What?" Brooke laughed nervously.

"You can't arrest me over a misunderstanding."

Two officers stepped forward.

They placed handcuffs around her wrists.

"No! This is insane!"

She turned desperately toward Margaret.

"Mom! Tell them!"

Margaret immediately pointed at me.

"She's lying! She's always been jealous of Brooke."

Officer Daniels didn't even look at her.

"We have the video."

"We have over thirty witnesses."

"And we have a critically ill child."

Brooke's confidence disappeared.

As officers escorted her toward the front door, she screamed at me.

"You did this!"

"No," I answered quietly, holding Lily's tiny hand as the paramedics prepared to leave.

"You did."

Minutes later, the ambulance doors slammed shut.

I climbed inside beside my daughter.

As the sirens wailed toward the hospital, I silently prayed that I hadn't already lost the greatest miracle of my life.

Behind us, police cars remained outside the house.

But they weren't finished.

Because Ethan's recording had captured something else...

May you like

Something no one had noticed in the chaos.

A conversation that proved what happened to Lily had never been an accident.
