CHAPTER 5 — THE VERDICT

The courtroom remained silent as Judge Blake reviewed the evidence.

When she finally spoke, every word carried weight.

"The court finds overwhelming evidence of coercive control, financial fraud, domestic violence, and intentional concealment."

Preston stared at the bench.

His hands no longer tapped the table.

They trembled.

"The marital residence remains the sole property of Mrs. Mercer."

"The trust assets are immediately restored."

"Temporary criminal referrals are ordered regarding fraud, assault, and witness intimidation."

Gasps filled the gallery.

Judge Blake looked directly at Preston.

"This court does not reward cruelty."

Then she turned toward me.

"Mrs. Mercer..."

Her voice softened.

"You survived."

Tears finally filled my eyes.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

The bailiff stepped beside Preston.

"Sir."

He slowly stood.

Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

The sound echoed through the courtroom.

Vivian cried out.

"My son!"

May you like

No one answered.

Because justice finally had.
