Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Within fifteen minutes, the quiet pediatric wing of Mercy Regional was flooded with authority.
Two uniformed Columbus police officers entered the examination room, their expressions grim as Dr. Reeves handed them the printed medical reports, diagnostic scans, and her formal physician’s statement detailing Lily’s acute and healing trauma.
My mother was cuffed and led out of the hospital in disgrace, screaming obscenities and cursing my name all the way down the linoleum corridor, insisting that we were all ungrateful liars destroying an innocent family.
I sat numbly on the edge of the bed, holding Lily against my chest, gently stroking her hair as a licensed social worker named Marcus softly asked us preliminary questions.
"Your husband, Mark... does he know about any of this?" Marcus asked gently, holding a clipboard.
"He... he works late a lot," I stammered, the realization crashing over me like a tidal wave. "He drops Lily off at my mother's house twice a week for soccer practice. He never noticed... or he never wanted to look."
My phone buzzed violently in my pocket.
I pulled it out. It was a text message from Mark, followed by a missed call.
Where are you guys? Your mother just called me from a police cruiser saying you lost your mind at the hospital! Get back here, Vanessa is freaking out because reporters are calling her phone about the birthday party video!
I stared at the screen, the last lingering shreds of my marriage and my family dissolving into ash.
"Mr. Bennett has been notified by dispatch," one of the officers said, stepping back into the room. "We have units currently executing an emergency search and seizure warrant at your mother's residence and your sister's apartment in downtown Columbus. We're bringing Ms. Vanessa in for questioning regarding aggravated assault and child endangerment."

"Good," I said, my voice entirely devoid of emotion. For the first time in thirty-four years, I wasn't afraid of what my family would say.
Marcus, the social worker, gave me a reassuring smile, placing a card on the side table. "Clara, you're doing the right thing. We're going to keep Lily here for observation and pain management. A secure liaison will help you file a full restraining order against both your mother and your sister before the hour is out."
