Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Afternoon

The silence in the examination room was so absolute that I could hear the faint hum of the medical monitors outside in the hallway.

"Healing fractures?" I whispered, my voice sounding like it belonged to a stranger. I looked down at Lily, whose small hands were trembling in her lap. "No... no, that's impossible. Lily is clumsy, she plays on the playground, she scraped her knee last month—"

"Scrapes and bruises are one thing, Mrs. Bennett," Dr. Reeves interrupted gently, though her eyes were hard as flint. "These are defensive bone trauma patterns. They occur when a child blocks repeated physical blows or is grabbed and squeezed with extreme, localized force."

Dr. Reeves knelt back down beside Lily, taking the little girl's uninjured hand in hers.

"Lily," Dr. Reeves asked softly, her voice steady and warm. "Can you tell me who hurt your arm? Who hurt your face before today?"

Lily didn't answer immediately. She squeezed her eyes shut, her small chest heaving as silent tears spilled over her lashes. She slowly turned her head, looking past Dr. Reeves, past me, straight at my mother.

Mom’s face contorted into a mask of pure, venomous panic. She took a threatening step forward, her voice hissing like a cornered viper. "Lily, don't you dare open your mouth. You know what happens when you lie—"

"Mrs. Diane Bennett, step back away from the child immediately," Dr. Reeves commanded, rising to her full height and positioning herself like a shield between my mother and my daughter.

Lily shrank back against the hospital pillows, her small voice trembling as she finally let the secret out.

"Aunt Vanessa gets... gets angry when Grandma watches me," Lily whispered, the words tumbling out in a broken rush. "Whenever Mommy is at work and Grandma babysits... Aunt Vanessa comes over. She says I'm too loud. She pushes me... and last week when I dropped her phone, she twisted my arm until it popped..."

The words hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

Every time I had worked a double shift at the accounting firm. Every time Mom had insisted, "Oh, leave her with me, Clara, you work too hard!"—Vanessa had been there. Torturing my little girl behind closed doors while I trusted my own family to protect her.

"You lying little brat!" Mom shrieked, losing all control. She lunged forward, her fingernails clawing out toward Lily with animalistic fury. "I'll teach you to ruin our family—"

Dr. Reeves moved with incredible speed, intercepting my mother by the shoulders and shoving her firmly back against the wall, pinning her there with professional authority.

Without taking her eyes off my mother, Dr. Reeves reached out, picked up the wall-mounted emergency phone receiver, and dialed three digits.

"This is Dr. Hannah Reeves in Pediatric Trauma at Mercy Regional," she spoke clearly into the receiver. "I need an immediate police detail and Child Protective Services intervention in Examination Room Four. We have an active child abuse disclosure and an assault in progress."
