Chapter 5 - The Phone in the Sofa

By dawn, Lily’s condition had stabilized. The swelling in her face had gone down, and she was sitting up in her bed, sipping a cup of warm tea. Arthur sat beside her, holding a tablet that was connected to the secure recovery system.
"We found your phone, Lily," Arthur said gently.
"Is the video still there?" she asked, her voice quiet. "I tried to hide it under the sofa before Richard... before he grabbed me."
"It’s more than there, sweetheart," Arthur said, tapping the screen.
The video Lily had recorded wasn't just a recording of the assault; it was a record of the entire Whitmore family dynamic. It showed Richard boasting about his immunity, Margaret telling him to "clean up his mess before the guests saw the blood," and the Chief of Police nodding in agreement as he promised to handle any "domestic issues" that might arise.
"This is going to the state prosecutor," Arthur said. "But first, we’re going to let the public see what kind of people they’ve been renting their apartments from."

Using a secure, anonymous routing protocol, the Vanguard team leaked the high-definition video directly to every major news outlet in Texas. By 7:00 a.m., the footage of the wealthy real estate heir assaulting his wife while his mother and the Chief of Police discussed a cover-up was the number-one trending topic on every social media platform in the country.
The Whitmore brand, built over three generations of old-money prestige, evaporated in less than an hour.
