Chapter 10 - The Quiet Life Restored

The sun began to set, painting the Texas sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and gold.
Arthur stood up, stretching his back, his muscles relaxing into the familiar, comfortable routine of a quiet evening. He walked inside to check on the dinner he had started—a simple roast with carrots and potatoes, the kind of meal that tasted best when shared with someone you loved.
As he stirred the gravy, he heard Lily’s light, quick steps coming up the porch stairs, the sound of her laughter as she chased a stray kitten that had wandered into the yard.
It was the same sound he had cherished when she was a little girl, the sound of safety, of happiness, of a home that was no longer defined by what had been lost, but by what had been saved.
The black satellite phone was still hidden beneath the dashboard of his truck, locked in its case, cold and silent. But Arthur knew he would never have to open it again. The world had been burned down, the rot had been cleared, and from the ashes, they had built something that no one—no matter how wealthy or powerful—could ever take away from them.

"Dad!" Lily called out from the doorway, her smile bright and whole. "Is dinner ready? I'm starving."
"Just about, sweetheart," Arthur said, setting the table for two. "Go ahead and sit down. Nobody eats alone on Sundays."
