Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

By 9:00 AM, the sun was once again burning through the New York clouds, but the atmosphere inside the executive boardroom of Moretti Holdings was sub-zero.
Seated at the long mahogany table were my top corporate board members, two senior federal marshals in plainclothes stationed quietly by the double doors, and Vanessa Romano, who sat near the head of the table wearing an immaculate cream Chanel suit, looking radiantly confident.
“Adrian, darling,” Vanessa purred, standing up and walking toward me as I entered the room. “You look exhausted. I told you that housekeeper’s passing would take a heavy toll on you. You really should have let me clear out her things days ago.”
I didn't kiss her cheek. I didn't smile. I walked straight past her, pulled out my leather chair at the head of the table, and sat down.
Vanessa’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she quickly recovered, smoothing her skirt. “Well. I suppose we have a busy agenda today. My father’s legal team is downstairs ready to finalize the subsidiary acquisition papers. Shall I call them up?”
“Don't bother, Vanessa,” I said evenly.
I reached into my briefcase, pulled out the encrypted flash drive, and placed it beside my laptop. Then, I slid a single document across the polished wood toward her.
Vanessa glanced down at it. Her face drained of all color in a single, catastrophic heartbeat.
It wasn't a corporate acquisition paper. It was a federal warrant for asset seizure and corporate indictment, signed by a federal judge less than an hour ago, citing RICO violations, obstruction of justice, and the murder of federal prosecutor Thomas Vance.
“What... what is this?” Vanessa stammered, her voice pitching upward in sudden, desperate panic. “Adrian, are you out of your mind? What kind of sick joke is this?”
“It’s not a joke, Vanessa,” I said, standing up slowly. At six-foot-two, looking down the length of the table at her, I felt the full, crushing weight of the Moretti name settle over the room. “It’s the end of your family's empire.”
Before Vanessa could lunge for her designer handbag, the boardroom doors swung wide open.
Four federal agents stepped into the room, followed by Maya Reyes carrying a thick stack of certified evidence ledgers.
“Vanessa Romano,” the lead agent announced, flashing a silver badge. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
“Adrian!” Vanessa shrieked, tears springing to her eyes as the agents grabbed her arms, pinning her hands behind her back in handcuffs. “You can’t do this! We’re getting married! I love you!”

“You loved the vault,” I said quietly, watching as they dragged her screaming toward the exit. “Claire loved her daughter. There’s a distinct difference.”
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, the boardroom fell into a profound, suffocating silence.
